I think getting Blair Bartrem involved is pretty smart. He's not a producer but he was a pretty good program director and a very bright marketing guy. It probably is a way to get him into Rogers Toronto campus and I expect he'll do a lot more for them. Having said that, I find this hire both interesting and confusing. It's clearly an attempt to lower their demo but that demo has left music radio in droves. I'm not a CHFI fan ( I like music) but I do wish Pooja and Gurdeep well. They're both likeable and that's something ( although so was Mo).

I have had the pleasure of working with Mo at a couple of stations and have always been in awe of her talent. I can't comment on her last 5 years as I haven't heard her at CHFI but I have difficulty believing whoever replaces her will do a better job.

Rogers can't help themselves. To do this today, during the biggest Jays series in several years, tells you 2 things. First, they don't care about The Fan and it's audience. There is no other explanation, although the timing probably has a lot more to do with their HR department than the programming department. And the other thing this tells you is they have no idea what good radio is, because if they did, JD Bunkis wouldn't be doing the morning show. Especially with 2 people nobody has heard of.

He's actually referring to CFTR and not CHUM FM. My first gig was as his first op in '73. Great guy, very funny and very smart. The only thing I knew about radio before working with Rick was how to spell it. I learned a lot from him.

I agree with you Maybe. Radio is completely different and Rogers made a big mistake doing what they did. I was referring to the TV broadcast. Hope you're well!

By the way, there was an interesting story involving John Stirling, the New York Yankess venerable play by play man, and his Spanish language counterpart Ricky Ricardo ( that's his real name). Apparently, the 83 year old Stirling was rescued from his flooding car by Ricardo during the flooding in New York this week after calling a Yankee game. The Yankees were playing the Angels. In California! It seems the Yankees have been doing the same thing as the Blue Jays during the pandemic; broadcasting remotely.
This story indicates the Yankees, the New York Yankees , aren't sending their broadcast crews on the road during the pandemic. The New York Yankees! But yeah, it's Rogers being cheap. As I have previously noted, there are a lot of very good reasons to dump on Rogers. I am not a fan. However, there's a pandemic going on and we seem to be ignoring that. I'm just grateful that all the major sports have continued to play during it. We've all been sitting in front of our television sets for a year and a half and lord knows it's impacted every one of us, some more than others. What I'm saying is, bitching about Buck missing a fly ball is pretty low on my scale of things to get frustrated about.

I understand the knee jerk anti-Rogers sentiment. Lord knows I have had my fair share of issues with them. This though is mindless bitching without really giving any thought to the fact there's a pandemic going on. Buck is not my favourite baseball announcer but he's been a major part of the Blue Jays since the 80s. He's 72 and doesn't want to travel during Covid. What's wrong with that? Seems to me he's a lot smarter than a lot of Floridians just for that. Add to that the fact that crossing the border now is a large pain, I'm perfectly fine with his and Rogers decision. As for the "rumour" that he's an anti-vaxxer? It's a rumour. And the nitpicking about the integrity of the broadcast is ridiculous.
I like Dan Shulman a lot but the "rumour" is he doesn't want to be the Jays full-time announcer.
There's another aspect to this that I frankly find pretty humorous on this site. Over the last year and a half, an awful lot of us have been doing things from home. Studio visits are few and far between although it's starting to change.
I guess what I'm saying is it's fine to be anti-Rogers. They deserve the negative reaction most of the time. This though is nothing more than whining.

First, I hope you and Val are both doing well. You are two of my favourite people and I have a lot of respect for you both. I was fortunate enough to work there several times, first as a board op and later doing middays . It was a tremendous place to work and always sounded so good, And the talent that went through there was amazing. Thanks for the memories

Offline Re: What's The Most Irritating Spot Currently Running On Radio? There's an ad running on TSN Montreal paid for by the government of Quebec and it's not just awful, it could be triggering... a male voice actor talks down to men who are abusive to their female partners, and after listing various abusive actions tells them to stop behaving like that with the tag line saying "it's not up to her to change, it's up to you to change."

Like that would ever convince an abusive person to take responsibility for their behaviour. The Quebec government really is in another world. I'm surprised someone hasn't called for the spot to be pulled.

I disagree Randy. It's a problem that we all know exists and it doesn't get enough attention. 'm not sure it will change anyone's behaviour, but I do believe it brings attention to a pretty big social problem

These are not easy situations. I worked with Mike at a couple of stations and I respect his talent. As I see it there are several issues. First, we as a society have gone too far with this cancel culture. There should be some pushback at some point. Having said that, p__i is a word you just can't use in any capacity at any time, and Mike has to know that. It's fine to be edgy, but you can't be stupid. And finally, although this might not be the case for it, I'm all for the first company that refuses to buckle to pressure from the woke crowd.

I can tell you without fear of contradiction that programmers believed Cancon was inferior in the beginning and that didn't change as much as it should have in later years. Remember Octavian, Chester and Uranus and many others? I'm saying that because early Cancon was not seen to be as good as what was available internationally, programmers held that belief. There were a lot of turntable hits.
As for the cover versions , some were very good, some weren't. The point I was making was more about the perceptions programmers had about Cancon. No more no less. I was in many music meetings where the Cancon adds were treated very differently from the rest of a playlist. It just was that way. It may be true that a lot of the artists I mentioned would have succeeded anyway, the impression that Cancon was inferior remained for far too long.

I can't speak for every station but I worked at 2 where we definitely flooded theban music industry was 10-12 PM with Cancon but it's important to remember the reason. When the Cancon regulations were adopted in the early 70s , the Canadian music industry was not able to produce enough good music. So a lot of the songs that got airplay were inferior to the international product. Part of it was a matter of scale and part of it was not being ready when the switch was made. There were a lot of Cancon knockoffs (remember the THP Orchestra or Paul Nicholas ( I think he covered Heaven on the 7th Floor). Anyway, the point is, because of the inferiority of early Cancon, programmers believed it was never better but we know that changed. Look at Canadian stars since the early days: Shania Twain, Drake, Celine Dion, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Michael Buble, Nickelback (don't say it), Shawn Mendes, Rush... world class, and for my money , Cancon was a big part of their success.

I think Doug Ford is a good man in a bad position. He's clearly in over his head and should never have been put in this situation. To be fair ( and isn't that the Canadian way?), he was doing the right things early in the lockdown, but the wheels fell off when the vaccines became available. The vaccination website is a disaster, and it seems worse because the guy in charge apparently can't work a computer! The media reaction in the press conference was a reflection of the majority of Ontarians . Frustration. It's true that the Federal Liberals deserve a lot of the blame, but the other provinces are not as bad off as here.
I am curious if,  after we get out of this Covid nightmare, there will be a push toward separation from Ontario by the city of Toronto. One of the big problems Ford has been facing is from rural MPPs who want everything to return to normal because their ridings are fine. Toronto and the GTA is definitely not fine. It's quite a juggling match for the provincial government. Look what happened when regions around Toronto were open while Toronto was in lockdown. If I'm in Timmins today, I'm wondering why I have to be in a lockdown.

I can't see any Canadian media company putting a Talk format on FM. It's too expensive but I think the problem with these companies is a sort of inertia. No one wants to take a chance because what happens if it doesn't work? I'll tell you what happens. The person who made the decision to take a chance will take the blame for it. That's why we keep hearing the same stuff over and over again. We should have had a Triple A station years ago but if there's no guarantee of success, it won't happen.
