I only got to watch Rocketship 7during summer vacation and Christmas vacation. On school day mornings, watching television was strictly forbidden, unless [cough, cough] you were ill.

Great ad collection RA!. In their early days I believe Irv Weinstein had several humourous quips about Ch 7's viewership issues. "We are the number four station in a three station market" and " More people watch ch 4's test pattern than our newscasts"

Nov 30, 1958, WKBW TV signed on for the first time giving Western New Yorkers their third VHF television station. Initially, GTA viewers could not receive the station because their antennas were designed to receive ch 2-6. Having to fork out more money for a head to get ch 7-13 wasn't going to happen for most Torontonians. The industry finally designed an antenna to receive all VHF channels. It became known as the "2-4-7 Head" Something else many may not be aware of. WKBW was originally planned to be an independent station. In the mid 50's ch 2 was ABC, ch 4 was CBS and ch 17 was NBC. In early 1958, after losing boatloads of cash with their UHF experiment, NBC shut down WBUF. and returned their affilliation to ch 2. That left ABC available for ch 7.

The main reason everyone remembers "Uncle Walter" interrupting As The World Turns to deliver the initial report that Kennedy had been shot is because in 1963 NBC had no programming between 1pm-2:30pm. ABC had no network offerings between 1:39pm-2:30pm. Uncle Earl's Classic TV Channel site has the entire ATWT episode from 11/22/63 complete with commercials, network promos and Cronkite's several interruptions.

I watched a bit of the first half and most of the second half. Losing by one goal to a team most expected us to lose to anyway is a good thing. A possible draw against Croatia and hopefully a victory over Morocco, depending on goal differential, might get Canada into the next round. Long shot, but not impossible.

Ohe thing I noticed last night, after their 11pm news ended, WGRZ had a continuous Weather/Event Cancellation scroll running across the bottom of the screen which meant the Tonight Show was not simsubbed. WIVB had a similar scroll running during the Y & R. While that soap is not simsubbed, Bold & Beautiful, which follows it is simsubbed. It may not be, today.

Just a correction. The "Heidi" game was a regular season telecast. Oakland scored two TD's in the final 90 seconds which was only seen by viewers in the Mountain and Pacific time zones. The 90 second segment was shown on the Monday Huntley-Brinkley Report. The AFL Championship game was held Dec 29th where the Jets defeated the Raiders 27-23.

Now one can ask google "Hey Google...is there a game today" and "is it televised".
Gone
are the days of just simply checking a TV guide (ie Rogers box) to see if there is a game...

I  simply use the the apps for Sportsnet or The Score to find out what games are on and when. Both give you data for seven days in advance.

Interesting that Buffalo's Star 102.5 is being raked over the coals on the Buffalo Radio Discussions forum.  They are being  slammed for their lack of imaging or effort into the Christmas music.  Apparently the music hasn't been updated in years. And concerns about starting the music right after Halloween which they did last year as well.

One poster mentioned that he replaced Star 102.5 on his car pre sets with CHUM-FM.  CHFI also came up in the discussion and some knew that their flip comes on Nov 14th.  Interestingly one poster also said that all stations on the CN tower reach metro Buffalo and area.  But not as clear as years ago since some of the stations now have adjacent low power local translators that interfere with the Toronto station in certain parts of town.

I have always wondered what the reception is like for the Toronto FM's in Western New York.
