We heard all of the same weak arguments and fears 51 years ago, how our freedoms were being taken away by the government and CRTC. Yep, that's what happened, your freedom was stolen back in January 1971. This lame and embarrassing point of view becomes even more ridiculous considering what is happening in the world today. Try talking to someone who came from a country where freedom was really stolen. Watch the news tonight, and you will see what really happens when freedom is taken away.

Sault ste marie in the 60s.... morning show guy thought it would be funny to send up "war of the worlds" by saying there were incoming unidentified aircraft spotted by NORAD over hudson bay and flying south. he ran with it for over an hour between music. HUGE panic because, well, cold war and all.
keep in mind, the soo has the shipping locks and a steel plant, and a NORAD base in upper MI. within the hour, US military brass was at the station demanding an explanation. The announcer wasn't fired, he just.... stopped coming into work after that.

thing is about american politics.... cnn running this program is simply preaching to the choir. facts don't matter any more and the source is irrelevant as long as it aligns with your own echo chamber.

Can't speak for p1, but in my case, it almost doesn't matter how you define CanCon.
My point is the CRTC has no business applying any content rules to the Internet, let alone to a company run from another country. I have always hated the government sticking its fingers into content when it comes to programming. Let the market decide. And keep the legislators out of my web browser.
the rules ensure that there are jobs in an industry that gets huge tax breaks. i don't like that they're not telling Canadian stories, but at least thousands of people are employed. that's the idea of regulated CanCon.

As a sidebar, I came across this on Wikipedia's entry on CanCon. It's an interesting look at the rules when a Canadian station airs American syndicated programming.
Talk radio and American syndicated programming
That article is wrong. Current radio CanCon requirements are 35%, unless otherwise stated as a Condition of Licence. Things changed drastically with the implementation of the 1998 Commercial Radio Policy. Remember Foreground programming??? Further, it's common knowledge that John Tesh, Nikki Sixx et all are only voice tracks, and allow for Canadian broadcasters to insert CanCon music, and local news/info/adverts, which still qualifies them for local programming under the CRTC's 42 hour rule.

It's complicated, but if you're game for a lot of reading, the answers can be found here.
oh i know where the answers are.... but neither of you are using those as a basis for your theoretical arguments.

CHIM Timmins had its licence pulled way back in 2012.....https://crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2012/2012-589.htm
But, in april 2021, a christian station was licenced to Christ Evangelistic Association Inc serving scarborough on 105.3. that's the best i can come up with.

well, considering i'm an old 80s metalhead, Rebel FM in Ottawa or more recently The Bruce from Port Elgin using radioplayer. CHTZ has gone downhill dramatically in the last few years with zero talent left. Boom Toronto is also very well programmed.

Just cancel ET and show the test pattern, would be an improvement.
I grew up in the Owen Sound area. We didn't have any TV at all until the mid 50s. Then came CKNX TV CH 8 from Wingham.
They didn't sign on until 4:00 PM each day. From 3:30 until 4:00 they showed the test pattern. The local newspaper there carried the TV program listings for our only channel. From 3:30 PM to 4:00 PM the program they listed was "Test Pattern."
That Indian head test pattern was pretty compelling TV for a nine year old kid. Sometimes the kid from next door would come over and watch it with me.
the test pattern still sounds like a better watch.....
