I've received alerts from Alert Ready/Emergency Management Ontario on my Bell Satellite TV of tornado warnings in full red screen for areas of western and southwestern Ontario while watching Global Toronto News at 5:30 PM September 7, 2021 here about an hour north of Kingston, Ontario but nothing on my phone. No thunderstorms here yet but may change overnight!

We're Cogeco subscribers in the Ottawa Valley, and we get those weather alerts on Global Toronto for other areas of the province, likely a last remnant of CIII's original Ontario-wide licence terms/conditions from day one.  Must originate from Global's master control hub (still in Calgary?), as the alerts are part of the program stream and not seen on any other channel.  Late spring/early summer this year, an episode of "The Young & The Restless" that my wife had recorded was pretty much obliterated by tornado warnings up north... Timmins, Kirkland Lake etc.  Given all the warnings that were issued today (Tue) in Y&R's 4:30-5:30 time slot, I scrapped today's recording and set the TiVo to pick up the same episode tomorrow (Wed) on CBS Detroit (WWJ)... Global is always one weekday ahead of CBS on airing new Y&R eps.

The article says Rogers needs "to deliver long-term value for [their] customers, shareholders and Canada." Are you frickin' kidding me? What a friggin' liar and idiot Natale is, as is each and every Rogers shareholder.

No wonder my Rogers wireless bill went up by $11 (eleven dollars!) this month. Good God Almighty... greedy friggin' morons.

The big CIII-TV-2 signal, one of Global's "original six", from well east of Bancroft, at a dot on the map called Vennachar, not far from Denbigh and the Bon Echo area. A snowmobiler checked out the site this past winter and posted this video:

Just down the road, on Hwy 41 at the south edge of Bon Echo Provincial Park, is TVO's Cloyne transmitter site, still on the air in digital... we drive past this site all the time on our way to Napanee and Belleville.

Heard something similar a few years back while in Peterborough, on Cobourg's CFMX 103.1.  Almost like a random "skip" every three or four seconds on the OTA signal from Alnwick Hill.  Issues with the STL or other feed from the studios?

That's what radio is in the 2020s - centralized, boring, milquetoast, corporate cookie cutter content, with the only "local" content being ads, and nearly day-old canned rip-and-read weather forecasts from Environment Canada, with multiple place names totally butchered by an out-of-town Bell/Corus/Rogers/Stingray minion who did not make any attempt to confirm the correct pronunciation(s).

Going back to my childhood here... during that nearly 20-year run of "Inspector Gadget" most mornings on Global, the end credits mentioned the show's somewhat rare 1983 soundtrack, by Shuki Levy and Haim Saban, being available on Saban's record label... still one of my favourite TV animation soundtracks, up there with the pop-ish songs Lisa Lougheed (and maybe Luba as well) did for CBC's "The Raccoons".  The "Gadget" playlist on YouTube can be found below:

My wife watches CHCH's airings of "Matlock", and they too sound sped up... about a semitone higher, based on how the theme song sounds, plus the picture is a tad soft and blurry.  Almost as if the original NTSC "prints" were converted to PAL, then back to NTSC.  Never did notice this years ago when WXYZ Detroit aired Matlock reruns on weekend afternoons.

On Vision TV, however, I noticed, when my wife PVR'd their airings of "Murder, She Wrote" and "Highway To Heaven", that the pictures were very sharp, very clear, complete with some noticeable film grain on the HD feeds... I think Vision's copies of those two shows were re-scanned to HD from the film masters.

This year's cuts at the "big four" are the final straw for me - I'm done with radio and television.  Forget it.  Both industries, especially in Canada, are completely dead and gone, and as long as Bell, Corus, Rogers and Stingray are in control, nothing will make those industries any better.  I stopped listening to commercial radio and watching commercial TV (and using radio/TV stations' online offerings) earlier this year, when the pandemic hit, and there is no frickin' way I'm tuning in again - there is absolutely no good reason to watch or listen anymore.  Cookie-cutter content, pre-recorded jocks on radio, decreasing local content (aside from advertisements), owners/managers/salespeople completely eliminating any editorial independence/autonomy that news staff had, and just plain putting out a terrible and unlistenable/unwatchable product.  I've even gone so far as to remove the iHeartRadio, Radioplayer and TuneIn apps from my phone - I do not want to have anything to do with radio or TV in North America.

Radio and television are dead. Period.

106.9 Ottawa is the successor to CJSB 540, one-time sister to CTV's CJOH-TV and remembered by many in eastern Ontario and southern Quebec as "54 Rock". The flip to FM happened in 1994... CJSB became CKQB-FM "The Bear", still with a rock format, and since Corus acquired the station a few years back as part of the Bell/Astral deal, CKQB has been CHR "Jump 106.9", and the station's high-power rebroadcaster in Renfrew County (99.9 Pembroke, transmitting from the CBC FM tower at Rankin) is still on the air today and still mentioned in Jump's legal IDs.

Rogers and their shareholders obviously have absolutely ZERO respect for Canada's veterans etc.  Rogers does not care about each and every man and woman who has fought and died for our freedoms.  This makes me absolutely sick and then some, that Rogers, a major Canadian company, is completely disrespectful toward veterans, including my grandfather who served in WWII and passed away this past spring, well into his 90s.  At the same time, it does not surprise me that Rogers does this - all in the name of profit.

DO NOT PLAY CHRISTMAS MUSIC ON CANADIAN RADIO OR TELEVISION PRIOR TO REMEMBRANCE DAY. NONE. AT ALL.  If you do anything - *ANYTHING* - Christmas-related before November 11th, you are completely disrespectful and heartless, and should not even be in existence.  Show some frickin' respect.

SOWNY » Use of Alert Ready "attention tones" » July 15, 2020 6:48 pm

My wife is watching Bell's CJOH (CTV Ottawa) 6pm newscast as I type this.  Earlier, maybe around 6:10-6:15pm, a story on a murder suspect arrested today in Carleton Place was aired, and the reporter mentioned that this morning, while police were searching for the suspect, the Alert Ready system was triggered/an emergency alert regarding this manhunt was broadcast in that area, and I believe all of nearby Ottawa as well.  Only problem with CJOH's report this evening?  They aired the Alert Ready "attention tones" loud and clear in the middle of the package, when no active alerts or tests were being broadcast during the newscast.

I know that in the States, it is pretty much illegal to broadcast the sounds of that country's EAS (emergency alert system) outside of an active alert or test, but what are the rules in Canada?  Did CJOH/Bell mess up, or was the airing of the attention tones (as part of a news report) allowed by the CRTC/Pelmorex/whoever made the rules regarding Alert Ready?

OTTAWA, April 8, 2020 /CNW/ - The Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ) is disturbed to hear from journalists who say their stories are being vetted to ensure advertisers are kept happy.

While the CAJ cannot confirm the practice is widespread, several journalists have reported that their news stories are being reviewed to ensure they do not contain anything that would offend the business community, in the interest of preventing ad losses.

Sales staff have also reportedly offered favourable coverage as incentives for advertising packages.

Happens all the time where I work, and there's nothing that anyone can do about it, because the boss expects our news coverage to please only our advertisers and potential advertisers, and nobody has the balls to stand up to the boss and speak their mind - they're afraid of how the boss (a known bully) might react, which could be anything from a loud, profanity-laced tirade to firing the person for insubordination.

On numerous occasions I've overheard seasoned salespeople offer news coverage as part of an ad buy, and the boss has absolutely no problem with this happening.  On almost any given day, with or without COVID-19, the station runs at least one "news story" about something happening at a local business - things that are not newsworthy under any circumstances.  Things like a new menu at a restaurant, or some random business donating some money to a local cause, or whatever.

The boss needs to be fully aware of, and fully accept and abide by, Clause 5 of the CAB Code of Ethics, specifically this part of it: "News shall not...be formulated on the basis of the beliefs, opinions or desires of management..." But the boss will likely say that this Code does not apply at this st
