Vin Scully was a master at it.  He thought of his radio audience first when simulcasting.  Rogers obviously doesn’t care about the radio side.  If his bosses did, they would demand the same of Shulman.  As it is, every second or third pitch gets a radio description.  Martinez?  A lost cause on this issue.

I think it’s a false equivalence. All things considered Trudeau has not been great, and overpromised on early vaccine delivery. That said, he’s been competent. You can’t say the same thing about Doug Ford. The Premiere of Canada’s biggest country can’t even use a computer. It’s pathetic.

Josh, I think the issue is whether Trudeau has faced the same level of tough questioning over issues like vaccine procurement and flights from overseas that Ford has on his obvious mistakes.  I think not.  But then, my idea of a balanced media in these times went out the window when one so-called journalist breathlessly posted a selfie of herself with the prime minister.

Of course this is turning political. How could it not? My purpose in posting it, though, was to note the incredible animosity of every single reporter at that presser. I can't recall anything like it in recent memory. They clearly had it in for Ford, and he deserved a lot of the criticism.

I'd love to have that same pressure applied to all levels of government. Part of the media's job is to keep leaders accountable and as a longtime news guy, I'd just like to see it being applied equally.

Completely agree.  I’m pretty much in the middle but most journalists I’ve met and worked with slant towards the left, although most would deny it.  I suspect that plays into how they question political leaders.

Just missed Capricorn inclusion, Dale!  🤣

My parents bought a Queen’s Coronation tea mug the year I was born.  I missed the King’s death but was alive for that, although I somehow have no recollection of it at four-and-a-half months.  😂

Interesting story. I'd heard some of it before but had long forgotten about it. Not only did the CRTC put the kibosh on CKO when denying the deal, they also pretty much assured the end of CKEY. To this day, I wonder what an oldies station on FM - virtually non-existent in Toronto, AM 740's low power repeater notwithstanding - might have done and whether 'EY would still be around today. Or where CBL would be on the dial.

I suppose we'll never know, but I think you're right - CKO on 590 might have carved out an audience for itself, and there may not have ever been a 680 News. History changed in that one meeting so long ago. Fun - and a bit sad - to contemplate what might have been.

I was at ‘EY at the time and we were massively disappointed.  It was all part and parcel of my never-ending claim that I would never let a CRTC board member operate an elevator I happened to be on.

Sadly, by the time I left, that view (west) was obscured by a mountain of condos.

The Montreal Expos were the first, under the unfortunate ownership of Jeffery Loria, back in 2000.  He demanded an exorbitant amount for broadcast rights.  The end result was that Expos games were not on radio or local TV that year.

Jays have an (very) outside chance of replacing the Yankees as the five seed.  They would play Cleveland in that event.  But probably they’ll be #8 and up against Tampa Bay.

RA, you were gone from ‘EY when I moved there from Ottawa in 1984.  But yes, many of those great people you mentioned were there during my seven-year tenure.

Broodcaster, thank you for mentioning Al Craig, an outstanding and tireless sportscaster.  I meant to bring up his name in my earlier post, but I had yet another senior moment, and I forgot.  I was once tasked to do a M-F split shift in London in 1979.  I lasted less than six months before I bailed.  I lost track of how many years Al did a split shift and still covered local games in person.

I’d love to see Rogers Centre upgraded.  (Actually, I’d like to see it razed in favour of a ballpark, but that’s never going to happen).  But the stadium in Buffalo is too small in terms of seating capacity for anything but a one-off event, methinks.

So sad to hear of her passing.  Always the straight goods with Blatch.  Loved being in her company.  I’ll never forget riding shotgun while she drove through the French Alps during the 1992 Albertville Olympics, both of us singing along at top voice to a Johnny Rivers tape playing in the car.  Poor Larry Tucker was in the back seat trying to concentrate on banging out a column.

Every sentence of a Blatch column, be it sports, hard news, or light comedy, came straight from the heart.  Howard Cosell may have coined the phrase “tell it like it is” and Aaron Neville may have made it a hit, but Blatch delivered it, every day in print and on air.
