I'm committing the cardinal sin of failing to read the link.

I'll simply observe that Canadians do indeed pay for content which we consume. 1. Subscription fees to satellite and cable companies, who pass on a portion to the content providers. 2. We sit through tsunamis of commercials. Last time I checked, there would be no advertising revenue without viewers.

Cry me a river.

Wow. A roll in the hay with a US$31,000,000 bonus. You see, my Little Hulksters, it certainly pays to eat your vitamins.

Now that all media has been fractured, with audiences scattered here, there and everywhere, I miss the sense of community that surrounded the likes of 1050-CHUM, CKFH and CFTR, back in their halcyon days of rock n' roll.

Air-conditioned cars (in Canada) were a relative rarity when those stations ruled, so it wasn't uncommon to pull up to a traffic light with the windows down, only to happily realize that almost everyone around you was listening to the same manic DJ on the same great rock station. Those days were when the DJ made the show!

Cruising by 1331 Yonge Street on a summer's evening, while listening to the guys in the building blasting out the hits; now THAT was 'community' radio.

This is starting to look (sound?) like talk radio. Why don't we all try to respond to the actual question, mmmmm? A more complete explanation of the question is in post #1 above. I'm guessing that no one here actually owns a weather radio...thus the off-topic answers.

SOWNY » Beaver FM? » August 18, 2019 10:18 am

I enjoyed listening to Canoe FM and Moose FM in the Muskoka / Haliburton, recently.

What? No Beaver FM in Ontario? How did we let Kentucky ( and Tennessee ( steal that?

SOWNY » Weather Radios » August 18, 2019 10:13 am

I'd like some feedback from those of you who own a NOAA / CLC S.A.M.E. weather radio, please.

Are you currently getting any alerts OTHER than weather on your weather radio? For example, are AMBER alerts coming through as well?

I ask this because of the following paragraph on a Environment Canada website...
"With its SAME capability, Environment Canada's Weatheradio network is well positioned to accommodate non-weather-related warnings. It will become an integral part of an eventual Canadawide public alerting service to be established in collaboration with other authorities."

Any other feedback on your experience with these radios, in Southern Ontario, would be appreciated.

Why bother listening when there is no care for local content anyway?
Give the listener more local feeling, complete with the return of a live and local overnight shift and maybe the listeners will return, but continue automating things and it's just plain stupid, leaving radio useless.

Hard to argue with that logic.

SOWNY » Global News Radio - Hamilton » August 7, 2019 9:26 am

I like Old Time Radio too. However, now that we've all waxed nostalgic about Jack Benny, et al, allow me to re-post the original question...

"Given all the time, effort and expense put into rebranding the various Corus radio stations, why is Global News Radio - Hamilton playing old-time radio shows each night between 10:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m.?

Surely, the Charles Adler Show is closer to the "News Radio" theme than our old friend Jack Benny, no? And, Corus is already paying him."

For me, the real aggravation is bundling. Forcing me to take channels that I don't want to meet a dollar threshold is the height of corporate arrogance. When I toddle into my local grocery store, imagine if the store had a policy that you must buy a box of cereal, toilet paper, shampoo, and a head of lettuce, even if all you want is a pound of butter.

I looked at Rogers, Bell, Cogeco, and Shaw choices, and thought, "Why am I putting myself through all this frustration, in the age of streaming?"

They don't. It's their desperate attempt at getting people to actual listen to the choices.
