Back in the day there was CKDS-Stereo 95 in Hamilton. Everyday at 3:30 Richard Gale would do the full ID. “CKDS-Stereo 95 is 95.3, CKDS-FM, Hamilton, with antenna atop the CHCH-TV tower in Stoney Creek.” And then back to Invitation to Music...

Quite a few years ago, during one of the four times I was at CHML, quick hits which featured conversations with the local Environment Canada experts (careful, now) would become part of our daily drive-time menu. Prior to that becoming fact, a couple of us wound up at the Mt. Hope airport to discuss what the technical terms in the forecasts -- 30 per cent chance, etc. -- really meant.

We came away with a pretty good overall picture. Most important:

1. They really didn't want to commit to anything beyond what would happen the next day.

2. The possibility of change became greater the further down the line you went (e.g. 7-day forecast).

But 3. The key to remember, and the reason that we don't always get what they say, is the Great Lakes
make this one of the toughest areas in the world to do accurate weather forecasts.

That was back in the '80s. Sound like this week?

The World of Weather, with meteorologist John Wingfield. 7:55, 12:40, and 6:15 daily on CHML.

Don’t forget Oldies “92-9 The Grand” in Caledonia. A sort of reincarnation of CKOC complete with Rockin Ray Michaels. Comes into Hamilton really well and usually as far as Oakville.

Low power is what it is although Bill Hepburn in Grimsby says he gets it all the time: http://dxinfocentre.com/pix/22-Toronto.JPG There are people regularly receiving Star Ray fair distances but I think they are all using antenna amplifiers.

Since the latest repack the station has less interference. In the east end of Toronto analog 22 went off the air in Oshawa and in the west end TVO in Kitchener did not move to RF 22.

Rabbitears.info has a good map of potential Star Ray TV reception: https://www.rabbitears.info/contour.php?appid=0000ca1ada0099999990099999999000&site=1&dma=N&map=Y&contour=N&lppc=N&int=N&pop=N&incpop=&excpop=&z1=N&nrqz=N&lprw=N&head=Y&asrn=&extras=&cir=&circen=

Citytv on channel 79 would have been difficult to pick up anyway due to the high frequency.

If I pick up anything on RF 22, it's WXXI and subs from Rochester. Never a peep from anything else.

Paul did mornings on CHML Monday-Saturday. Flew to Montreal to tape at CFCF and then back home. On a few occasions he got snowed in at YUL and missed his Monday shift. Maybe it was Phil Hitchcock who filled in.

Seems to me Cherington started by doing the 6 o’clock news on CHML and then “Nightline” from 9-11. Then a coordinated programming change with CHCH moved him to 6:30-9 right after the major news, weather (The World of Weather with meteorologist John Wingfield), and sports and a new title—Action Line. (Same time Perc Allen moved “Open Line” from 1:30-2:30 to right after the 12:30 p.m. newscast with Lloyd Dafoe) When Action Line started airing earlier, Cherington was free to go over to CHCH after the radio show ended and deliver the 11 o’clock news on TV.

By the weekend, you are likely to see a major improvement in WKBW reception.   Possibly WUTV and WNYO as well.  Based on postings on AVS forum, the helicopter crew is expected to hoist the new antenna for WKBW today or Friday.   It is also expected that the crew will also hoist a new antenna for the WUTV Grand Island Tower site, where WNYO and WUTV will broadcast from on RF 32.

Thought WNYO Channel 49 was on RF 16. Is it changing?

Thanks for checking. Seems there are lots of cooking shows and even cooking channels out there. I’m sure it’s a financial decision. Not sure what it costs to affiliate with World and what’s the electric bill for running another sub-channel.

Anybody know why WNED no longer carries PBS World? And hasn’t for quite a while? PBS stations in Rochester and Erie both have sub-channels that carry it. I enjoyed it more than Create—which seems to be mainly cooking shows.

Good old C-8-ch-mel.  Liberty 7-0121 or (as Tom Cherington always said, “If you’re calling from the beauty spots,”) Zenith 9-9240. Then at some point they changed to 645-3221 and Zenith 9-9-900. Before 1-800 numbers, I think.

Very informative and helpful tvguy. Thanks for taking time to spell out all those details. I’m in Oakville and never can pick up the 49s. Maybe that will change by March 13.

My experience on the last set of changes was to receive the 51s very strongly since then and hardly at all before then.

The Toronto Star used to have regular TV columnists – a guy named Jack, whose last name eludes me at the moment, the curmudgeonly Dennis Braithwaite, Jim Bawden and more. I think it was Greg Quill who covered radio for them, although all too often, it was only CBC programming.

It was Jack Miller. Both he and James Bawden came to the Star from the Spectator.

Wow, I was sure that was a misprint. How did a U.S. station ever get affiliated with a Canadian network? That just sounds bizarre to me and I'm surprised the government let it happen. And I thought shared time stations were weird.

I recall that Jack Miller covered this phenomenon in his Spec Radio/TV column. Is his material archived somewhere?
