I don't know if I saw it on here yet, but Bob McCowan had a stroke. He announced it on Twitter. I used to listen way back when he was on The Fan 1430
"I guess I should let you know that I have had two strokes over the last couple of weeks and have been in hospital since. Can’t walk or talk but am getting better very slowly! Hope to get home and back on the podcast as quick as possible!"
Great news that he is able to return home. All the best Bob!

I definitely remember some of his "live hits" on various morning radio shows. You can check out his Wikipedia entry here.
I updated the subject line!

What ever happened to him?

Hey Mike, listener FOTM.
It was honestly a walk down memory lane with me. Bowling for Dollars! Are you kidding me, I loved that show. I just wonder why no current Newstalk 1010 people were on. Does Bell Media actually have a restraint of trade clause?
Your podcast is the only honest exit interview I actually trust.
Please try to get Stafford, he is one broadcaster I really miss.
SOWNY » How Much Does It Cost? Really » February 23, 2022 9:16 pm |
Clearly I have never worked in radio, but minimum wage is only $15 in Ontario. I never understood why radio owners would not pay minimum wage to anyone willing to do it, instead of running a repeat of a show. A three hour show could only pay $45 for the host, and the producer "pushing all the buttons" Three hour live show, $90 in payroll costs. The fixed costs would be the same whether you have a live host or not, wouldnt it?
Clearly I do not understand the business, can someone please help me out?

I listened to Paul and Carol Mott a lot when they were both in Niagara, and Toronto. It does not take much to impress me, but I thought it was cool that they could broadcast from their farm, way back in the day. Beside Bob McCowan broadcasting from Vegas, I never noticed anyone else.

Speaking of WKRP, the WKRP-Cast podcast posted something today that is way over my understanding, but maybe you guys might like it.
[i]"TECHNICAL DETAILS: If you're a fan (and, hey, if you're on this page, we're guessing you're a FAN!) of WKRP, you've probably noticed the slight pre-echo you can hear from Mimsie. Mimsie is the MTM "Lion" who appears at the absolute end of every WKRP episode. If you listen carefully, you can hear what sounds like a faint echo of Mimsie's 'meow' just a second or less before it happens.
Ever wonder why that's there? This is an artifact of the videotape Hugh Wilson was forced to shoot on in order to get cheap music rights. Way back in the old days, if you owned reel-to-reel tape, it was recommended that you store your tapes in a "played" position. This meant you had to rewind before you wanted to listen to a tape. The reason for this was to prevent the same kind of echo we are hearing from Mimsie.
Tape, both audio and video, is coated with a magnetic oxide. The oxide is highly susceptible to tiny magnetic fields. When a tape is being recorded, the magnetic field from the record head is placing the oxide in specific patterns. Later, when you play it back, the read head will interpret those patterns as sound. Those patterns are not fixed or locked in any way. The oxide is still mobile and could be moved into other patterns. This is why you can record over previously recorded tape.
When a tape is in the "ready to play" position, the oxide that passes over the tape head has been pressed up against the layer below it...possibly for a long time. The layer of tape below, the one that will play just a second or less later, can sometimes have a strong enough magnetic field to imprint on the outer layer of tape. In the case of Mimsie, the spot where her 'meow' falls is in an area of the tape where there isn't a lot of other content. It's a relatively quiet spot right before her meow. Since the WKRP source tapes have been stored in the "ready t

The Newsreader just said "You are watching the CP24 Breakfast Weekend, stay with us, and also listening to us on Newtalk 1010 this morning. Stay with us"
There was a definate pause between "stay with us" and the rest of the sentence read. Usually when there is a slight change in NT1010 shows, it usually is mentioned here. Did not see it yet. Great idea, Bell only pays for one show.

Bingo. As someone who has lived with depression, anxiety and occasional panic attacks over the last ten years, I have hated this campaign since day one. Charlie described it perfectly, and that's how it has always been for this bottom-of-the-barrel, piece of garbage conglomerate that does this country absolutely no good. Running this campaign this year is completely inappropriate and then some, especially given how so many of us in Ontario are reaching absolute rock bottom due to current events and are bound to totally explode upon the smallest trigger.

Seriously, if Bell is once again going to talk the talk and not actually walk the walk, this whole nightmare of a campaign will be a massive slap in the face for every Canadian who lives with any mental illness or mood disorder. Same if anybody takes to social media and parrots Bell's messages - if you share the hashtag or any of their Facebook material etc., you are also a virtue-signalling hypocrite and fail to realize how insulting your (and Bell's) empty/meaningless messages are to the 20% or more of us in Canada who live with illnesses such as depression, anxiety disorders, panic disorders, bipolar, schizophrenia, and so on.
If this corporation truly and genuinely gave a rat's arse about the mental health and well-being of all of us, especially their staff, I would expect that they would a) not fire experienced media professionals simply because they're paid too much, and b) fork over a hell of a lot more MH funding than the drop in the bucket that's allotted each year. A few million bucks a year (that probably has all kinds of conditions and quid pro quo attached to it) won't do a damn thing for Canada's mental health services which, like the rest of our healthcare system, are collapsing around us - they need literally billions of dollars in funding to get anywhere near being able to sufficiently serve the rising number of

I think it is weird for a news program to shut down for an extended break, as if one is seeking news, the viewer will obviously chose the competitor on CP24. Can BT get those viewers back? I watch Morning Live so I did not even notice. I saw this post on Twitter.

"Audiences have not returned to radio in Toronto since the start of the pandemic
Listenership is still down 12% from Fall 2019 and down 20% adults 25-54 (key demo)"
How do ratings actually work?
Is it by hour? by show? by minute?
If I do not like a song, or a commercial, or a talk show topic, how does it know if I change the channel?
Does streaming on Google or Alexa count?
How do they know if I changed the channel?
What if I am listening to SiriusXM?
Thanks!

I was surprised that this topic has not been discussed here on SOWNY, especially when an On Air host disappears. Sports Net Radio The Fan 590, Joey Vendetta on Canada Day, which most would say "feels" different this year, posted a tweet what was called tone-deaf. His twitter account no longer exists, and his afternoon radio show has been replace with CBS programming.
As reported by Mike in Boston from Toronto Sports Media.

With the experience of "The Chase" and "Masterminds", Brooke Burns would be my choice. Likeable, smart, eloquent, would be a good choice instead of argument of "another old white man".
Second Choice, none other than Geordi Le Forge.
Ken Jennings comes off unlikable in Mastermind, and has history with Twitter.
