The COVID-19-free idea is spreading like the virus. It's a lot easier to do the no-corona format when you're a music station. Much harder if all you do is talk.

Still, broadcasting giant WGN Chicago is pledging to do a virus-free Friday (outside of news updates) in which anyone who brings up the dread spread for the entire day is promptly reminded it's a no-go zone.

“If a caller, guest, or even you yourself accidentally brings it up, you get zapped [with a buzzer sound effect] like the opening scene of ‘Ghostbusters.’ . . . This is a great way for us to offer a break for all our listeners and potentially encourage new listeners. Since we are talk radio and rely on current events, this can be challenging, so do some off-the-wall topics.”

WGN Radio declares ‘Virus-Free Friday’

Great idea.

...and that's why I suspect that the "Stingray newsroom" is actually Canada Press...but I didn't want to assume.

The "Stingray Newsroom" is a collective of broadcastors in the Stingray media chain of radio stations updating our markets nationally, every hour. So, basically... it's Canada wide on Stingray radio stations by Stingray employees.

You just made me PINE for the days of Mix 999's all request all night.

I used to host that, back in the day when I would fill-in for Punch

If I may... Not all stations are created equal. Not all PDs, on air talent and Consultants are created equally either. This quote is from ONE disgruntled jock making a broad stroke observation. YES, PPM meters are important, it's how stations are rated, ranked and purchases made from advertisers. Yes, it's important to get people to listen at appointed times. When you designate those appointments, make the moment fun, content worthy and something hopefully memorable that makes listeners want to return or talk about it so others will be interested and listen. If a PD isn't somewhat of a ratings manipulator then they aren't doing their job. It's their job to create GREAT radio, motivate the talent, get ratings, make the station money as it is a buisness.

Every form of entertainment (radio, TV, movies, podcast...) wants you to "tune in" or "watch", "return" or "don't miss" otherwise, what's the sense? Let's just keep trying to make radio fun, interactive and interesting - there will always be exceptions to the rule. Not every station/jock will NAIL IT, but don't let them ruin it for those that are trying hard to accomplish that.

What about KJ (Kris James) who’s been at it in Toronto for over 30 yrs, or Maie Pauts a veteran of Toronto radio who has never left the market.

Those are A25-54 All Week numbers, finally the demo that matters has been post!

I'd like to toss in my 2 cents on this topic. I believe if someone has "that something" that you hear in a demo, it's worth investigating and spending the time because you BOTH benefit. Years ago, I needed a part time jock - put out a post and in return, got a pile of demos. I've always liked the idea of giving someone a chance like I was given years ago by JJ Johnson - so I make it a mission to return the favor, when I can.

One of the demos I received was one that was made by a woman at her kitchen table. It was poorly produced and sounded bad, but she "had something" in her voice. She had ZERO radio experience (no school) but a ton of passion and energy. I invited her in for an interview, explained our station's philosophy and tossed her on air for an overnight audition. I could tell after the first audition, she still "had something" worth investigating so I put her on for another night after some coaching.

Long story short, I hired her part-time and she totally bloomed on air for the 2+ years she was with us. I'm quite proud of Meredith Shaw as she's now a full time personality at CHUM and is killing it in many other (somewhat related) areas professionally. So... it CAN be done as long as someone's willing to take a chance and find the time to coach the talent. Oh, you also need someone who has the passion, drive, sees the big picture and has the talent to push through and make it happen for themselves.

As programmers we need to find the time to coach talent and take some chances - we owe it to the industry, AND it's part of our job! When you can witness someone transform/grow because of hard work and passion, it's an extremely rewarding moment.

I'm sure it was.  The comment wasn't about whether or not is was the right thing to do.  It was about management and sales squirming with it...especially during ratings...which, even though it feels like it, aren't ON and HOT every day.  [even though the run-up to' it' is maybe even MORE important than the actual time when real numbers are actually compiled and where millions of dollars are ultimately, then, divided into piles.]
------------------------------------------------------------

And you know what 'boy'...Even at their career peaks less than 50% of all listeners LIKED Elvis...or the Beatles.  So?  It WAS a gutsy move.  What about the other half + of your audience?

The beauty thing about "management & sales" at Newcap is we are all on board and encouraged to do what's best. We don't have to screen things or ask permission here - If it'll sound good & makes sense, we do it. Yes, stations like this do exist. As for the other half, the positive feedback outweighed the negative by a landslide. Those that know "boom" know it was genuine and tolerated it. If they didn't like it we simply explained what we were doing, why and that we would return to normal in 24hrs - they seemed cool with it.

Not too surprised to see a small station like Indie 88 go all Tragically Hip but I'm surprised to see big commercial stations like Boom 97.3 and Q107 playing all Hip!

Surprised?  Me too.  Especially during ratings.

SO sad to have lost a man who actually cared about folks...and made his passions known.  Tributes are, obviously, deserved.  But all Hip...all day?  Now?  That's gutsy...and not business-like at all.

FYI... everyday in Toronto radio is "ratings". Gord Downie brought the country together - playing The Hip all day was a no-brainer and the least we could do at boom.

I'd encourage going all oldies, but the true oldies fan is either settling for AM 740 or focused on what Boom 97.3 throws at their ears today.

It's actually "boom 97.3" no capitals, lower case always... branding. ;)

I find these type of "scoop" things funny. Who cares? It reminds me of when top 40 artists have a new song out and stations scramble to "be the first" to play. The only people who give a shit are the people at the radio station.

Do you think listeners care who played or had a guest on first? In the days of PVR, SoundCloud and live Facebook, the audience will access the info when it's convenient for them. Just make sure you have a good sounding station to keep them coming back - that's all that should matter.
