NYTheSpirit.com is in it's 8th year. I can see from that, what's happening. And where the audience is coming/going.....and I really wish the daily growth was happening for radio also. And there are still those in radio who look to the future. While I can't give names here, they talk to me about that future.

Sometimes radio thinks they can't get a large mass audience on the internet.

It is to be remembered that in a city such as Toronto only about 1500 listener ballots get returned when it's a mail in affair. Then those numbers are multiplied by very large numbers based on the cities population to get possible rating numbers/shares for each station.

I believe the same is true of people meters and other ratings devices. If I'm wrong please let me know.

Radio has always been my friend. I don't want to see it waste away. But - ask most folks under the age of 30 if they have a radio.....if they do - do they ever turn it on?

Much better. Great song.

I agree. But - why would radio across Canada not consider playing this? I always thought the Can/Con percentages were meant to help and give exposure to new artists. Why then do some radio stations in Canada fulfill their commitment by playing only old stuff.

If their format dictates a decade or two I understand - but there are many stations playing old Can/Con up against new releases from other countries. Programmers and Management should be trusting the person they appointed as Music Director.

Or perhaps they prefer online creative internet radio/streams keep building as each day passes. :-)

There is so much increasingly great Can/Con being missed. Perhaps there is a need to start seeing the Con/Con rules through positive eyes.

Just a few thoughts on a Thursday afternoon...

Music is subjective. We are not all supposed to like the same thing. I've spent a lifetime proving that. :-) However I found your comments compelling.

With that in mind what do you think of this song by the same artist.....?

We all carry very accurate weather reports in our pockets by way of our cellphones. Sadly however - it may not be long before the Corporates announce all their weather folks will be retiring. Then a news reader (anchor) will do a brief 30 second weather update.

It's kind of like why radio did continuous time checks way back in the day. That started before most folks had wrist watches. It was a reason to tune in. Perhaps might even explain why the morning show was the ratings getter. Now it's something to fill the back announce.

Just a thought....

This is not an easy post for me to be making....

Some of you will remember Brad McNally for the 80's period of CFNY. Many will remember his creative and leading Sunday evening program Eclectic Spirit. A show that found it's way into many corners of life at the time. Brad was also a driving force when it came to the song - Workin' On The Radio. Some of the musicians on that session were Domenic Troiano, a few from Teenage Head, and others. It is available on Spotify if you wish to hear it.

A few weeks back we did a big 2 hour Zoom Event for Brad. Many of the CFNY-FM DJs, and a wonderful gathering of his fans all Zooming together for Brad. Great stories were told and much happiness. That event was recorded and sent to Brad's wife. During the past few weeks Brad has been watching that recording of the event. From that video Brad knew how much he was loved and respected by both those of us who worked with him and the many fans who grew up listening to him.

Brad put on his wings earlier today at his home in Australia. He will be missed by many.Good Night Brad. Godspeed.

It appears to have happened. From the Star today:

Could be months for this battle to come to a conclusion, while the Rogers-Shaw deal hangs in the balance.

The CRTC should not approve this deal. Not now and not ever.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this - it's an article from 2017

Norway became the first country to ban FM radio broadcasting. The northern county of Nordland on 11 January 2017 stopped radio broadcasting using analogue frequencies. The primary reason behind banning FM radio broadcasting is government's endeavour to offer a better radio service to the whole population.Jan. 12, 2017

It may depend on the browser you are using to get there. Many of them have their own music services and perhaps they don't like competition.

For me the best one for streaming/listening to music is Firefox.

As for "increased online tuning"?. Oh Yes! It's true.  :-)

This will be small potatoes if Bill C-10 is approved. There is so much wrong with this bill - not to mention that the consumer (you and I) will get the even shorter end of the stick.

IMHO - Bill C-10 should not and hopefully will not pass.

While I was not part of the original application - CFNY won their license due to their frequency at 102.1. And it is probably no coincidence that N and Y became part of the call sign.

When I did arrive at the station - while one day while digging around in a closet I found thousands, boxes and boxes stacked high of the New York bumper stickers that read - I ) NY.

A few years back CFNY was on its way to bringing the Modern Rock/Alternative back. But then someone got in the way.

And Country in Toronto? Can't forget KISS Country. The then owned by Rawlco KISS - On January 26, 1993, at 1 p.m., singer Anne Murray pressed the button to launch the station, with the CISS-FM call letters and CISS-FM 92.5 (pronounced "kiss") branding.

Yes to you Tomas Barlow - who wrote......=12pxThe argument you guys are making is that the delivery method is more important to you than the content. =12pxThat’s an odd point of view in my humble opinion. To me the announcers and the music are the reasons to listen... Not the receiver.

Marsden writes - As I wrote a few weeks back, it's time to stop thinking about what a radio is. Time to start asking is it a Noun. Adverb, adjective etc

It no longer has to sit in the dashboard or one's car. Nor is it any longer a box sitting on one's night table.

Only the old guard thinks of it that way. And that is how the old guard are going to lose all those millions they have invested.

Folks watching  at work. Others sharing TV but the other person doesn't want to watch the wrap-up. And some just using their phones to watch things like YouTube. I often watch YouTube on my 65 " flat screen. In my Chatroom during my Saturday show someone mentioned that he and his wife had just subscribed to YouTube.

And this is just the beginning. :-)

Most importantly - old fashioned TV, like radio - just don't know what to do about this new thing that is serving the world. Reminds me of when AM music radio didn't know what to do about this new thing called Progressive and Free Form on FM radio. Internet radio has now caused 100s of FM radio stations to go all talk. That would be stereo talk.

Television now, like AM radio then and FM now - believe they have or had a lock on the audience. Oooops!

Radio and TV don't have to be little box or small screen sitting on a table.....

However Prod Guy - while you may consider the discussion to be about politics and issue goes way beyond politics and/or politicians. Bill C-10 is very very dangerous. It hovers so very close to silencing everyone as may be done in country such as North Korea.

Bill C-10 must not pass. For if it does many many things we accept in our daily lives may be brought to death. Including the freedom we each have to say what we think right here on sowny.net.

The depth of this bill is beyond anything we have ever seen before. Equally - it leaves a very wide channel of interpretation for those in the long terms of our future.

I think I remember there being a thread here regarding the late night TV drives through Toronto and how relaxing and special they were. And I agree.

But now there is something equally special and relaxing. I don't know if they are showing every night nor what time they start or finish. I have been watching for well over an hour.

It is beautiful and so peaceful. Looks like drone footage but I have yet to see a shadow. Smooth as silk. Compliments to the producers.

I am watching on TVO, which for me is channel 19-1. it is now 3:09 AM and its rolling along beautifully.

It is called Tripping The Niagara. A way to relax and get ready for sweet dreams....
