Another +1 for TechMoan.
One of my favorite formats that I've never seen before but appears to be pretty cool is the Tefifon... a "cartridge" with a "tape" inside that is read like a record... go figure.

In the early 2000s, there was a station in Cambridge (the name escapes me but they eventually turned into DaveFM).
One afternoon they broadcast that the next 3 people that showed up at their promotions van parked at the Walmart at the 401 and Hespler Rd. would receive a prize.
I was about 10 minutes down the 401 so I thought I'd stop by and see what was left.
When I arrived 10 minutes later, the promotions team said no one showed up so I could have everything.  (A CD, a branded car window shade, and a frisbee.). LOL.

Years later, my office co-worker programed all the Speed dial numbers on the office phone for Y108.  I won on The Wheel of Meat, lots of event tickets, and 100 Lotto 649 tickets.  (Only won $5.)

If I EVER meet the guy that placed those long antennas on the front fender near the windshield, we're gonna have words.
I can't count how many times I've smacked my face while scraping frost off the windshield.

Well, thanks for the explanation...
I guess what I hear is better quality audio coming from the Toronto feed when driving down the 401.
And yes, I noticed this when listening to Vinyl Tap.
Too bad it's not in Stereo.

I've been listening to CBC Radio 1 out of Kitchener for a few years now and noticed that all of their content is broadcast in mono.  All the music that they play (Beatles, etc) is in mono, where if I switch over to the Toronto CBC, it's in Stereo.
Anyone else notice this (or care?)

January 5th, 1992.  I still remember the date (thanks to imdb) when I heard the first F-bomb on CBC TV.
Great movie btw and used in great context.

A little bit odd... but back in the 80's on Sunday nights (one Sunday I'm pretty sure was NYE), I used to listen to The Sunday Funnies and Theatre of the Mind on CHUM-FM.
I could be wrong but I don't recall the shows ever being pre-empted for NYE celebrations.
(My family didn't celebrate NYE much in the 80's)

It was great when they were automated because it didn't take you long to figure out what song was coming next so that you could tape it.
Good times.

I would stick BASF 90 minute Chrome tapes in my deck and hit record.  The sound quality was stellar for the time.

I noticed that in the morning Roger Christian would cut in between the automation reels.  Sounded almost out of place ...lol

LOL... me too Jody.  I know I have a C-90 somewhere from a July 1982 broadcast.

I was at a meeting of the London Vintage Radio Club this weekend and this month's lecture was on the CKO Radio network.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CKO

The speaker became interested in the history of the network when he found a cheap 70's office clock with the CKO - 99.1 logo.
I guess they were the precursor to 680NEWS back in the 70's and 80's and attempted to get an entire network up and going before pulling the plug.

Any of you old timers out there do any time at CKO Toronto or one of their affiliate stations?

Digging through a pile of VHS tapes, came across some of this goodness from CITY-TV Channel 79 from March 1983... Anyone remember The 1050 CHUM Card or CFGM 1320?
Also, a neat closing video for CITY too.
Good times.

I was at a radio swap meet the other week and a guy was selling a bunch of LPs that were sent to radio stations back in the late 50's and early 60's.
Some neat ads for Pepsi, Belvedere and Du Maurier Cigarettes, Ontario Hospital Insurance and more.

I've been actively PVR'ing them!  Love the old game shows!

Incidentally, a few years back when GSN was showing old B&W reruns of What's My Line, they had an episode of with a lady from Elmira, Ontario on.  I had taped the show on VHS (yes, it was that long ago.)
I looked up the last name in the local phone book and called the first one listed.
I explained that I had taped this episode from 1956 with a Mrs. Wydmyer and asked if this was her... there was a long pause and she said "Yes, that was me"
I sent the tape to her to share with her family and she was extremely grateful!

On a pleasant side note, I visited Mr & Mrs. Wydmyer at their invitation where we watched that What's My Line episode.  The guest star that episode was Jack Lemon.
Mr. Wydmyer said to watch Jack Lemon as his wife walked past the panel.   He was a little miffed that Jack Lemon was checking out his wife's ass.  LOL

P.S.  Mrs. Wydmyer was a female baseball umpire.

I work in a totally non-radio related business that is going through some job "re-assignments."

Today, we had a motivational speaker come in to help us with some of these "transitions"... not always a fun topic.

However, my ears perked up when the speaker stated that he was formerly a highly energetic DJ that loved the industry.  He worked his way to almost the top of the radio market in the 80's in his market in Southern Ontario before the station was bought out by one of the conglomerates and was axed due to the bean counters.

Getting shut out of the industry was one of the hardest things that happened to him when he tried to find another job (due to burning some bridges.)

However, the point of his presentation was that he re-evaluated his "portable" skills and eventually ended up as a motivational speaker (in additional to his other jobs.)
I have to admit that I am not a fan of motivational speakers (NO ONE is that happy or energetic), but this speaker definitely used his radio skills in a new field of employment.

I don't want to use his name in case he's a member here.

Any other former radio personalities here transfer to another profession using their broadcast skills?
