SOWNY » Do You Use Audacity For Audio Editing? You'll Want To See This » September 28, 2022 4:05 am

During my twenty years in radio, I was mostly a Cool Edit Pro/Adobe Audition user, and since my 2020 layoff have been using Audacity on a Linux-based PC. Audacity took quite some getting used to after using Cool Edit/Audition for so long, but I seem to have it down pat now, doing a lot of editing and multitrack for my wife's gig as a Junior A hockey DJ. (Side note: I'm now the local team's PA announcer.) More recently, I found a better USB audio interface, a yard sale find, to get balanced audio into and out of the system - it's a Steinberg UR44, connected to my Yamaha 02R console, and the audio quality is excellent compared to the computer's on-board audio I/O or the SoundBlaster G3 USB interface that I was using.

Looking forward to this newest version of Audacity!

SOWNY » CTV employees come forward about toxic work environment » September 27, 2022 12:55 pm

I've said it before and I'll say it again - Bell does NOT give a rat's arse about mental health. Period. And the accounts in this Canadaland story are proof.

However, CTV/Bell are far from being the only toxic work environment in broadcasting/media - it happens at other major companies like Corus, and even "mom and pop" outfits like those in, say, Belleville or Barrie. Early in my career, I was, on multiple occasions, on the receiving end of numerous completely unwarranted/uncalled-for F-bombs, screaming fits and other bullying tactics by more than one program director, one of whom is still in the same job 20+ years later, despite bullying most staff below him, including reducing several employees to tears. Management at one of the companies really didn't care if my co-workers and I were being bullied, and resorted to gaslighting regarding the situations.

Going back to CTV for a moment, a close friend of mine, who was a technician at a Baton-owned station in the '90s and is now retired and is a great storyteller when it comes to his decades in broadcasting, described how explosive some Baton brass were, including Doug Bassett himself. My friend's station was about to go live with a new news set early in the BBS era, and not only was Bassett overseeing the construction of the new set, he was freaking out over some minute details on the set, such as where electrical and comms outlets were positioned. I guess my buddy was trying to reason with the non-tech-savvy Bassett, but he just kept yelling, cursing etc., right up until the set's 12 noon debut.

Although I miss my broadcasting years, I don't miss the toxicity of some higher-ups, and I'm hoping more victims of bullying in any workplace, not just radio/TV, will come forward and have solid proof of what happened to them on the job.

It should go through the courts first - innocent until proven guilty. Have the accusers state their allegations under oath and with their names on the record. And until the allegations have been proven and the accused found guilty, keep the band's music out there. If any listeners or advertisers are offended/outraged/etc. by continued airplay, that's their own fault. Radio continues to play Chris Brown material despite that Rihanna situation in the late 2000s, and as RA mentioned, MJ with all those pedo allegations, and we don't hear anybody whining and moaning (or pulling ad buys) over those artists' airplay, so why are bands like Arcade Fire and Hedley getting the full-on "cancel culture" treatment, especially in the case of anonymous, unproven allegations?

SOWNY » Could This "Old Newscast" Idea Work Here Again? » August 29, 2022 8:00 pm

The "Master Control" channel on YouTube has what appear to be in-house recordings of '90s newscasts from what are now two CTV2 stations - CKVR Barrie and CHRO Pembroke/Ottawa. There are some "Total News" and "VRLand News" episodes in there, and from 'RO, Pembroke-produced newscasts from the Mid-Canada and BBS eras, as well as some early New RO (NewsSixOttawa) material, and some other Ottawa Valley surprises.

This 1993 edition of CKVR Total News looks and sounds as if it came straight off of a 1-inch or Betacam tape:

I did hear form someone who was there at the time that when CKLY flipped to FM the owners of the day did it on the super cheap. Instead of a new site, they put the FM stick on the same swampy site. It had worked well for the AM but was not conducive to FM transmission resulting in a signal that didn't get out much past the city limits.
As part of the major technical upgrades they found a proper site which allowed the signal to reach its full potential including (coincidentally?) reaching Peterborough.

I was a teen in Omemee at the time, about 10 km LOS from CKLY's site, and the signal, roughly 14 kW ERP, was about as good as what someone in the north end of Lindsay would receive. CKLY-FM actually stayed at the ex-AM site and is still there to this day, but just before the change from "Y92" to "BOB FM" in the mid 2000s, a significantly taller tower was built, allowing CKLY to transmit more efficiently with more height and less power. There were plans a couple of years earlier to move 91.9 to a site in the hills near Bethany, but I believe those were shelved.

I agree with Radiowiz on the ownership group's financial situation... the place had been rather unprofitable for probably the entire time that Centario (a group of area investors) owned CKLY. I can only imagine what it cost for them to a) bring in automation in 1997, and b) set up the FM plant the following year. One jock's job had to be cut, and maybe a second employee as well, shortly before the conversion took place.

SOWNY » "Turn Off the Stereo On FM and See What Happens" » August 25, 2022 7:13 pm

For its first few years on FM, Lindsay's CKLY was still mono, despite being a music station, but after CKLY was sold to CHUM in 2000-2001, 91.9 finally went stereo, as part of an equipment overhaul. I'm guessing the station was still feeding the transmitter with a mono audio line and/or the old AM audio processor which could not/cannot generate an FM-compatible stereo output.

I also remember hearing, for some time in 1999, a very high-pitched tone in CKLY-FM's audio... not sure what it was or what it was for, but I have a sample of it on tape somewhere.

A former co-worker of mine, a morning show host, kept his BlackBerry until about two years ago, when he finally ditched it in favour of an Android phone. I used a "crackberry" for a couple of years in the early 2010s, the Curve 8310, but my wife & I went Android just after we got married in 2012, and we're still 'droid users today. The thing I miss most about BBs is the physical QWERTY keyboard... typing on a touchscreen isn't the same.

Some websites, online services etc. won't even allow you to use a known free/ad-supported email service such as Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo to sign up - you more or less need to use an email account from your employer, ISP or university/college, or your hosting provider if you have your own domain name and website, and at least one email address on that domain name.

I've seen a similar thing happen on CIII, which we receive here in the Ottawa Valley via Cogeco and, until not that long ago, the Bancroft-licensed ch. 2 analog OTA signal from Vennachar. My wife regularly watches/PVRs The Young & The Restless, whose new episodes air on Global one weekday before they air on CBS, and on more than one occasion, we've seen severe weather warnings show up for a whole other part of the province... even Timmins! Pretty much wherever "Global Toronto" has OTA coverage is their AlertReady territory, likely because of something in their original licence.

Gibb's also an excellent resource for info about broadcasting history in Peterborough and the Kawarthas... not just with CHEX Radio & TV, but also Lindsay's CKLY (one of his former stations) and others. Also worth noting is in some of his YouTube videos, there's a big Allen & Heath audio board behind him - that console was at the TV station's current location on Monaghan Road, prior to the Peterborough control rooms being decommissioned early in the Global era.

That's correct... it was related to SODRAC and storing music on hard drives versus continuing to play CDs. In Belleville, CJOJ-FM had automation when I was in the area, but music was played off of NSM CD jukeboxes controlled by the automation.

I’m not sure if satellite still feeds stations much or at all with programming or if syndicators just provide download links for stations to pick up voice tracks (eg John Tesh, Delilah) to insert between music mixes.   I’d need a response from anyone who knows more info about syndicated programming today.

In the late 2000s, the Canadian airings of Delilah were distributed as individual segments, and each station would pull the files from an FTP server and import them into the automation. Earlier in the decade, the show was still transmitted live via satellite.

As for Tesh, a friend of mine was working at the then-CHUM stations in Ottawa in the mid '00s, and CJMJ-FM ("Majic 100" at the time) aired the show... they still had board ops playing the songs off CDs, and the Tesh voice tracks were on the Scott Studios computer, along with imaging and spots.

Yep, got two or three... one is a little 2001-vintage RCA/Thomson cassette deck with digital AM/FM tuning; another is a Venturer CD player circa 2002, also with a digital tuner; and in the attic is my late father's 1960s-vintage table radio that does AM, FM and I believe shortwave as well... runs on a set of D's, and can plug into a standard AC outlet.

Oh, and a little '90s-vintage Emerson AM/FM/SW, that my late mom gave dad on their silver anniversary in 1996.

While my wife was watching Y&R on Global this afternoon, master control cut to "CIII Toronto" bars & tone for 30 seconds at the end of the third segment, roughly where the traffic report is normally inserted just before 5pm. Likely "Global 1" relies on Rogers to feed chopper A/V.

Here in the Ottawa Valley, our Rogers phones are attempting to cut over to "EXT" service via the Bell network, and might be back online soon. The rest of our services (Internet, TV, home phone) are with Cogeco and, knock on wood, have been up all day with no issues.

Seconded! The many jingles from my childhood, listening to/watching radio & TV from Barrie, Peterborough and Toronto, are still fresh in my mind, thanks in part to YouTube channels like The W/O/C Archive (filled with retro CKVR material), and of course Retrontario. I think I heard more jingles for local advertisers on 'VR versus other stations like CHEX and CFTO... among them:

-Foley's Furniture, Collingwood ("You can buy the best of things, at Foley's Furnishings")
-Huronia Ford, Barrie ("The right choice right now!")
-Dunlop's of Moonstone (don't clearly remember the jingle, something about "out of this world" I believe)

...and I'm wondering if someone here on Big Yella would know who produced some of the jingles and other music for Channel 3, such as the "Stay Right Where You Are" campaign from the mid '80s.
