I see someone else is not a fan of excessive midrange.

I have to wonder if CHFI's processing might have been focus-grouped on in-demo women. It's said that women and men find different sounds pleasing, and radio engineering is 99% male. I've done some a/b processing experiments with my wife, and she prefers the settings I couldn't stand to listen to.

I’m a big fan of night end, and have a Treble Charger in my Camaro.

If you are using version 3.0 or later of sound editing software Audacity, you may want to remove it. It’s now considered spyware. Versions before that should be OK if you don’t update.

Gotta disagree with this. There’s a large Canadian fan base for Stern in Canada. SiriusXM Canada probably couldn’t survive financially without him. He really hits them with the Hein!

The hosts don’t really seem to get radio or even the term Shock Jock. They keep using the term “edgy talk” as both Stafford’s style and 640’s format. There’s nobody at 640 or any Toronto talk station doing especially edgy talk - part of that being a commitment to “news” radio. They also surmise Stanford was hired for his edginess. Seriously. They throw in a reference to Danielle Smith who was fired/resigned from one of Corus’ western talk stations. She wasn’t fired (or resigned) for being edgy. She claims she was being silenced by a woke mob. Apparently upset she couldn’t spread misinformation without getting called out.  Not edgy. Just pathetic.

It’s kind of a “fair use” issue, though it’s usually done with more newsworthy things. Even CNN and MSNBC air newsworthy clips from each other. Patrone’s use seems a bit lazier, especially using part of the other hosts audio.

“ The advent of PPM more than a decade ago fueled the myth that on-air talent don't greatly contribute to ratings; in fact, talk has frequently been positioned as a liability.

It's a conspiracy theory.  Music on the radio still gets ratings, of course.  But it's personalities that generate loyalty, as evidenced by the radio stations using sitting on top of Nielsen rankers.  And yet, in round after round of downsizing, talent is often among the first assets to go.”

Personality radio. Only thing that streamers can’t compete with. Especially with the non-commercial advantage those services have. It takes money and a commitment to great talent to win. The old adage: you’ve got to spend money to make money.

CBC Music really is the CURRENT definition of a AAA.

CBC Music, The Current Minneapolis, KEXP -- AAA.

89.3 The Current from Minnesota Public Radio is the benchmark for Triple-A stations. CBC Music is a pale comparison. WXRT out of Chicago is a good example of a commercial AAA.

This is a decent recent (mad rhyme!) look at the format:

I think it’s a false equivalence. All things considered Trudeau has not been great, and overpromised on early vaccine delivery. That said, he’s been competent. You can’t say the same thing about Doug Ford. The Premiere of Canada’s biggest country can’t even use a computer. It’s pathetic.

I’m sorry, but Doug Ford has been a complete disaster, and has surely cost some unnecessary deaths because of his bumbling incompetence. It’s good that the press are being tough. Ontarians are fed up with this doofus, and have to put up with him for another year.

Been saying this for years. Research bearing it out.

“Music has become commoditized and ubiquitous, available on umpteen streaming services, as well as on satellite radio, your cable or dish system, and your Bluetooth speaker system. It seems like in recent years, seemingly everyone has become a music radio programmer.

But it's personalities that have become highly proprietary. They are the difference-makers for so many radio stations. And they're the reason why more and more companies seek strong, habit-forming personalities, shows, and hosts in dayparts outside of morning drive. It's also why syndicated talent has become so important in recent years. Anybody can duplicate your music, but its the people behind the mic that are your “secret sauce.”

One of the shows I listen to as I work from home has an announcer that encourages safety  each day, this week, they are now suggesting not drinking and driving!

Is that a wise move and is it even ethical of an influencer with an audience, to suggest they not drink and drive?

To me there are some who are opposed and some are open to it. Does it not put those who are opposed to not drinking and driving at risk of tuning in elsewhere?

My question is this really. Should a host use their influence on air, to strongly urge listeners to not drink and drive?

Intuitively, I say no!  That those listening have choice and those who choose not too right now, well, you might lose that listener base.

I feel an announcer is there to entertain, inform, educate, but not to be a spokesperson for MADD..

To me it is a slippery slope.
