Interesting. Obviously that's their long-term goal, but surprised it would've happened so relatively quickly given how vast Ontario is and lots of rural areas. It might be they're pushing/moving people to the "Wireless Home Phone" (Telus link, but just to illustrate) concept where it's a small unit with a SIM card and operates on the cell network but any landline phones plug into a jack on that, instead of the wall.

Yeah. For me, the main (possibly only) AM radio station I plan to use it for listening to while walking around is Newstalk 1010 and that's on an HD channel - one of the reasons I bought this unit, to play around with HD radio vs. smartphone data usage for audio streams. And the audio quality improvement with the HD feed for Newstalk 1010 is quite notable in terms of being considerably better than any portable AM radio I've tried in terms of interference while walking around (i.e. with tall buildings around, hills, under overpasses, etc.) - a much more pleasant audio listening experience in the earbuds.

Earlier this year I was looking for a portable HD radio for walks that was truly portable - i.e. deck of card sized or not much bigger than a phone and great for the pocket or backpack with headphones coming from there. I'm pretty happy with my Audiovox IHDP01A.

Someone's Youtube video of it:

Agree Robert's a great talent. Witty, deadpan and concise without relying on sarcasm or overshadowing a host's personality.

On this point:

Dial Twister wrote:

John now starts at 5:00. They could give that timeslot back to Robert.

I couldn't imagine that John would refuse that extra 1/2 hour in bed.

As I understand it, there used to be a local 1010 overnight board-op (to handle the re-rolls, syndicated stuff, commercials, throw to news updates (Canadian Press ones, long ago done away with a 1010 local news presence in the overnights, but still), etc.). I know that person stuck around for Robert's 5:00am-5:30am "Early Edition" to throw to clips, etc. - Robert would occasionally reference them - before finishing up their shift and Robert slid into that role for John Moore's show at 5:30 am.

I think now that the board-oping is more centralized following the Bell purge, nobody in 1010 overnights in that capacity (we're excluding the work done with Jim Richards' overnight show, for that show specifically, which is across the network), so John starts at 5 am and that's the first live Toronto-based board op around of the day. Pretty sure that had something to do with that 5 am decision - lack of a board op, so Robert continues to do that for John, but just 30 minutes earlier now.

The other thing is that many people forget - John Moore has graciously pointed this out a few times - Robert "is a manager - and he has a staff" - he actually oversees, schedules, trains, etc. other board ops (what's left of them, locally, anyway, I guess). Not that he can't continue that and have his own show of course. But who knows where his ambitions lie and the time to do it all.

David Cooper ( https://twitter.com/dtcooper ) out of New York has been joining Jim for a while now on the show as comic banter/fodder/loosely defined co-host.

I believe "gardening accident" is Dave just wisecracking/being silly for Jim's planned vacation (show audio in podcast form posted this week leads with "David Cooper is in for the vacationing Jim Richards all this week.")   At another time this week on one of the shows he said "Jim is currently on an Arctic expedition with pick-axe in hand."   Sort of a "What crazy stories can I invent that Jim is up to?" type thing. Just part of the "bit".

Interesting that your viewpoint is "dumbing it down".    A big motivating factor for the format change was seen as how old, stuffy and stodgy the format and its music was perceived - not current and hip enough - with its huge blocks of classical afternoon programming (and jazz, yes). It got snickers for being "your grandparents' station" or even "your parents' station". I don't see that as "dumbing it down" or playing to a more rural audience or anything, moreso trying to appeal to a wider audience and reinvent a tired, decades-old format.

Yes, I know Bendixen and Woloshyn go "way back" - Bendixen was a Morning Show producer when Woloshyn had that gig on 1010 (in the "CFRB" branding days), I think one of Bendixen's first significant roles with the station. I was trying to put a timeframe to it and found an October 2002 National Post column by Christie Blatchford mentioning "Mr. Bendixen is a lovely fellow and a fine producer at CFRB Radio in Toronto, where I go on air a couple times a day", so that tenure was around 20 years ago, give or take a bit on either side of 20 years. That longtime loyalty was speculation on why Bendixen had Woloshyn in mind to do the 1010 Saturday gig (until this year's Bell cuts trumped that).

Interesting, @67GreenRambler. Not sure on that. The "Tony" is Tony Tedesco, a familiar 1010 behind-the-scenes name for many years. Jim mentioned he's known Tony about 12 years and Tony is posting about the show on his own Twitter account.

It'll be interesting to see if this great overnight experiment across many Bell stations succeeds. There is a fair amount of exaggeration and comedy "bits" (albeit not exactly Phil Hendrie level) that Richards didn't go to that level with on his 1010 afternoon show, but he *does* have 4 hours to fill and it is a late-night slot, so some of that to be expected.

Richards said at the top of tonight's show that "Patrick" (technical producer/board op) quit yesterday, and naming "Mike" again, said he's now on his "third technical producer in 6 weeks", Tony. And "Why am I still on the air?!"

Could indeed be a "bit" that he's "difficult to work with" and the reality is those board ops are finding the overnight hours unforgiving and ditch it for anything they can get that's a daytime shift. Plus, Richards pre-tapes a number of segments throughout the day with guests and more normal hours and the board op I assume has to be around for those or at least do some editing on them.

Very interesting - I recognized the name right away, but hadn't thought of him for a while! He was one of the rare 1010 news personalities not named Dave (at various times, that group included Dave Trafford, David Bent, Dave Agar, Dave McKee, Dave Bradley, Dave Woodard and David Craig - 'The Daves I Know' indeed!).

Always appreciated his calm/mellow but informative delivery - great vibe for the overnight.

I see his bus line linked to this video message of his amongst their other drivers and the voice is definitely familiar.

By the way, that 5-hour block, is that an "organic", original 5 hours the entire time? I admit I haven't listened as closely as maybe I should, but I could swear Corus's overnight "The Shift" in the Drex-hosted era (and maybe still?) either had a technical producer chopping up the best callers/comedy bits/interviews for an "encore" in the show's last hour, or the local station I was hearing it on just reran the first hour again (thinking a listener wouldn't be awake/around to hear both top of show and this reroll after show's end). I know Jim pre-tapes some segments for guests during more normal daytime hours, but is he live and throwing to those for the entire 5 hour block or is there some repeating of the show within there?

EDIT: Looks like the podcast versions only make available each of the 4 hours (trimmed for commercials/news), so I'm suspecting the 5th hour is a "best of" that night or rerolling one of the hours. When the show was initially promoted by hosts on 1010 they were saying it was "midnight to 4 am".

They've finally put up a page for the show. Although I do have kind of a problem with Jim Richards being described as a "writer, and political commentator." What, exactly, has he written, other than his not-always-so-amusing shtick and one liners that start off his show? And does occasionally criticizing Doug Ford or Justin Trudeau in a joking way qualify you as a political commentator?

Yeah, they're really stretching it with the "political commentator" label, although I suppose you could say a "new" meaning of it is folks like Trevor Noah or Stephen Colbert riffing on the day's news and politics with splashes of humor (and not the stuffy "old" image of a political pundit), which Jim (sometimes) does. Perhaps (and being generous) it might also refer to his regular 1010 John Moore morning show roundtable appearances kicking around opinions as well?

Interesting that CJAD 800 Montreal still shows schedule-wise that they're not carrying Jim's show and remaining with "Coast to Coast". Do the decision-makers think Jim's show might not play as well in Quebec? Is it a strategic/rights issue to hang onto the "Coast to Coast" rights and that's a station they've let continue doing it? (By the way, would they lapse if they hold them yet not heard on any stations? i.e. Buying them up and renewing them just to keep them away from competitors? Wonder if there's a clause that rights holder of them MUST broadcast them - somewhere.)
