SOWNY » Attn. CTV Toronto: Can You Send Someone With A Bottle Of Windex? » Yesterday 9:01 am

I think CP24 uses that same live Camera as CTV Toronto does.

SOWNY » CP24 moving to Channel Nine Court » June 19, 2024 3:21 pm

Just like CTV Kitchener. They moved out of their longtime home at 864 King Street in downtown Kitchener across from Grand River Hospital. Then they moved into a new building across from Sportsworld crossing this past year.

Rogers is already putting advertisers' names on the RDS display when commercials air, or at least that was the case when I was visiting the North Bay area last summer. Noticed it on Kiss 100.5 (CHUR-FM)... an example would be "Sponsored by Food Basics". Only problems would be a) how quickly the station's playout system and RDS encoder can send out new data, and b) whether a receiver would pick up the data and update the display before the next spot airs... RDS probably doesn't update as quickly as whatever text or image data comes in on an HD signal, plus it depends on how well the radio picks up the 57 kHz RDS subcarrier.

Worth noting is that CHUR has a very strong 100 kW signal from the CBC tower on North Bay's east edge, and at Marten River (beautiful spot btw), our 2019 GMC Terrain had no problems getting a clean RDS signal from that station.

Same with Jack 102.3 in London and CHYM 96.7 in K/W. Their RDS shows advertisers during ad breaks.

SOWNY » Alexendra Pinto leaving CTV Kitchener » June 14, 2024 7:51 pm

Alexendra Pinto announced she will be leaving CTV Kitchener later this month. She took over as anchor in 2022 when Rosie Del Campo left in 2021.

Her last day is on June 21st.

SOWNY » Corus loses Warner Bros Discovery content to Rogers » June 12, 2024 3:30 pm

What about the Disney channels that they own? Will they shut down soon like what they did to the Disney channels in the UK and Europe?
What about Treehouse and YTV? Will Corus still operate those channels or sell them? There is a lot of questions in the air now.

SOWNY » CP 24 subtle changes » June 12, 2024 3:25 pm

I noticed they upload full newscasts of CTV Toronto on the CP24 YouTube channel. They now upload the noon newscast and the 6PM newscast on there too. I doubt that Live at 5 would be axed because the 5PM newscast is now half hour on the main CTV stations. At 5:30 it is the national newscast with Sandie.

I glad I don’t listen to the Toronto stations as much. I live closer to London. But however there is one ad that is annoying and that ad is Matress Depot. I can’t stand that ad.

Are they still doing the SpongeBob parody?

Last time I was in London and listened to FM96 I heard that one. I remember that commercial in 2017, I remember that commercial 8 years before that…

Another London radio commercial I was surprised to hear when I was home at Christmas was London Major Appliances. Their jingle dates back to the early days of the Obama administration.

I think they still do the SpongeBob parody. But I tune the station to something else a bit then tune back to the station I was listening to. I didn’t know that the London Major Appliances jingle dates back to the early days of the Obama administration.
Another ad that I have found annoying lately is the Handy Bros ad that you hear on the radio and on CTV London during the newscasts. I don’t think it’s that bad when the person named Mitch from Handy Bros is speaking. But they have to play that annoying tune at the end of the ad.

SOWNY » Top Game Show Announcers » June 10, 2024 5:50 pm

The Game Show announcers that I grew up in my time were Rod Roddy from The Price is Right. Burton Richardson from Family Feud until 2010. He was also on The Price is Right in for Rod Roddy who was on leave during his treatment for cancer until he died in October 2003. Shadoe Stevens who announced Hollywood Squares in the 1980’s and he was a star in that version. He was also an announcer on the Tom Bergeron version from 1998 until 2002. Charlie O’Donnell who did Wheel of Fortune from the 1980’s until his death in 2010. Rich Fields who was the announcer on The Price is Right from 2004 until his dismissal in 2010. He was a weather person as well though I can’t remember what station he worked at. Johnny Glbert who today is still announcing Jeopardy. Before doing Jeopardy he did other game shows such as: The Jokers Wild, The $100,000 Pyramid with Dick Clark and others. Overall those are the game show announcers that I grew up in my time.

Good question and the answers are both lengthy and born of either cheapness or ignorance. As this former disc jockey notes, there are myriad reasons, including overly long spot sets, poor audio FM processing, too much noise on AM and unnecessary commercial copy clutter.

As he puts it, "Good God, is there no one in the building actually listening to the station?"

Pat was a great host. I still remember the day that Bob Barker retired from The Price is Right and he gave a farewell message at the end of the show. Did you know that were other hosts that did Wheel of Fortune? They are Chuck Woolery, Rolf Benirschke, and Bob Goen. I think they did the daytime versions of Wheel of Fortune.

SOWNY » KP Joins Jeff and Backstage Ben in the Morning » June 5, 2024 2:39 am

It looks like KP who did the afternoon show on 97.5 Virgin Radio in London is now doing the morning show along with Jeff and Backstage Ben. It looks like the morning show will be more entertaning since Laura Geddes left the Virgin morning show a while back. Also it appears that Rae Kelly from 105.3 in K/W will do the afternoon show.

I think it was a horrible idea for 99.5 to be on that frequency. Wasn’t there any other frequency avaliable? Or did they had to go with 99.5. Because the 2 strong stations from K/W are 96.7 and 105.3. 91.5 is somewhat strong but static at times.

91.5 is a surprise frequency in Toronto. Depending on the weather, you might get Kitchener, Barrie or Rochester. None exceptionally clear.

I didn’t know Barrie and Rochester NY had stations brodcasting on 91.5. What are they?

During CTV newscasts at 11 and 11:30. The weather segments are pre-recorded. London is live at 11 and Kitchener’s is also live at 11:30 as well. I don’t understand why weather segments are pre-recorded before the newscasts at 11 and 11:30 on the CTV and CTV 2 stations.

Speaking of CTV does anyone know what happened to Amandalina Letterio from CTV London? She was a reporter and the weekend anchor before she moved to the 11PM position after the weekend newscasts were axed by Bell of this year. I don't know if she moved on. There was no goodbye or farewell message to the viewers from her. It is just Carlyle Fiset who does the anchoring now at CTV London.
