Profit.Sorry, radio friends, but I'd need acid to get that feeling back.
Not necessarily! There's an online radio station called WIWS that tries to recreate the old sound of AM radio on the net. The gimmick? They deliberately try to sound like an AM station, with sometimes scratchy and staticky "reception," old commercials and records that are anything but from CDs or .mp3 files.
See if this takes you back, at least a bit. (The drugs are not supplied...)

I've been watching a few shows on CBS this past week and I've noticed they're doing something that seems a bit over the top. At the end of every show - every show! - they do a kind of split screen over the end credits, reminding people there are 96 or 93 days until the Super Bowl airs.
This has been going on for a few weeks and as of Thursday night, it was down to 80 days. It appears they intend to continue with this shameless countdown until the day before it actually airs.
Look, I get the importance of the contest - it's almost always the single biggest viewing event of the year and it rakes in millions of dollars in advertising. But promoing it more than three months ahead? That just seems excessive to me. At least wait until January or the end of December when it's a little closer.
This is the earliest promo for any TV event I can ever recall. It would be like advertising Christmas is coming - but in early June. Or going all Christmas on the radio in early November - oh, er, wait a second...
But really, when is too soon too much?
Oh that's nothing. NBC has been promoting next summer's Olympic Games since ... last summer!

I have to admit I'm a bit curious about this. The show must have an east coast feed, which means it's done out of Toronto at 4:30 for the Maritimes, where it's an hour later.
If it's shown across the country, do they have to do an updated version for the west coast stations? Given the ongoing fragile state of the world, a lot can change in the three hours between 5:30 PM Eastern and 5:30 PM Pacific.
Do they do a separate feed for them or do viewers there see three-hour old news that could conceivably be dated by then?
Monday's and Tuesday's shows can be see at link below (click on CTV News at 5:30 on left hand side):

I finally heard the afternoon jock, Peet Dictor (sp?), today around 5:45. Couldn't hear him very well though the static, but there was definitely a voice there.
Too bad this station isn't on FM. I like the eclectic music mix.

I listened briefly this morning at around 9:45 and heard the morning show team. They sounded pretty good actually. I didn't hear anyone in the afternoon drive spot but I may have not listened long enough - had trouble with the signal.
SOWNY » Car Radio Presets: Then And Now » September 24, 2023 12:15 am |
Well, I got my first car in 1971, and the AM pre-sets would likely have been:
1010 CFRB
1050 CHUM
1150 CKOC
1280 CHAM
1430 CKFH
I got FM in my car the following year (I had to pay extra for it as they weren't standard issue yet).
99.9 CKFM
102.5 WBEN-FM
103.3 WPHD
104.5 CHUM-FM
(can't remember what the fifth one would have been)
Nowadays I listen almost exclusively to SiriusXM - 50s Gold, 60s Gold, 70s on 7, Soul Town, PGA Tour Radio

SOWNY » CHUM CHART August 31, 1968 » September 1, 2023 3:52 am |
Well, CHUM-FM eventually did overtake CHUM but this wasn't until the '80s by which time CHUM-FM had long abandoned progressive rock.
Lots of tunes on that 1968 chart could be described as "heavy", including "Sunshine of Your Love", "Street Fighting Man", "Pictures of Matchstick Men", "Hush", "Back On The Road Again", "Time Has Come Again", "Revolution" to name a few.
I loved CHUM-FM back in the progressive rock days and in fact paid extra to get an FM radio installed in my car in the early '70s to hear it and the many other FMs like CKFM, CHFI, WGRQ, WPHD and WBEN-FM. Those were great days for radio both on the AM and FM side.

Your chart shows the handwriting on the wall. 1050 CHUM's top 30 was paving the road to oblivion in 1968
Oblivion? What oblivion?

I visit this board because of my love for radio and TV. They were a medium that touched everyone.
I believe there were two "glory years" in the business. The first was the very early years when the wonders of radio and TV were first introduced to the public. The second (where most of us participated) was the 50's through the 90's. Those were great years and I am thankful to have been a part of it.
But that was then.
Technology has moved on. The audience has moved on. The business has moved on.
The very fact that we can use a personal computer, tablet or cell phone to exchange these messages, anywhere in the world, is proof.
Nostalgia is comforting, but one must move on.
Amen to that. For those who think AM has a future, I have a bridge you might be interested in.

Interesting lists. But I'm surprised "Gaslight" by the Ugly Ducklings and "Canada" by the Sugar Shoppe and/or the Young Canada Singers, didn't make the 1967 list, and I don't see "I Would Be The One" by Kensington Market on the '68 list. And forget when it was recorded, "American Woman" was a 1970 hit, not 1969.

As a current overnight radio DJ, I agree 100%. I do get calls at night when I supply the request line number.
I worked 25 of my 35 years at CP-BN on midnights and I loved it (and also got night differential). You can get your work done without management literally breathing down your neck. No traffic driving to work either.
