Not to mention the decades he spent doing PM drive on CHFI. Loved “Stump The Chump” with Daryl Dahmer.

Dale, Remember that this is an 1972 article. Don't believe that Marsden/Mickie returned to Toronto radio at CHUM FM until 1973. Good point on the 'all nighter' Prtitchard

Lived in BC during the 80s. Some of the CFUN Good Guys were still 'playing the hits' then.
Great to see so many of them made it to the White Spot for the reunion..
Noticed that Dave Boxer (Montreal CKGM and CFCF) was listed as attending. I have great memories of him from my youth in Montreal.
Wonder if the Good Guy sweatshirt is available for sale?

Here's an article on KHJ's 'Big Kahuna' (Chris Varez)The Big Kahuna http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_isUvlzkZPIQ/S11TV9ZCetI/AAAAAAAAFyk/60TLzD8qzxA/s320/kahuna.bookA.jpg
The Big Kahuna died on Sunday. For us kids who grew up in LA in the 60s, so did another sweet part of our youth. The Big Kahuna was really Chris Varez, 69, who played a larger-than-life character that was still not as large as he was in real life.

From my book about growing up in the 60s:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_isUvlzkZPIQ/S14cffw41rI/AAAAAAAAFys/KImW0SmTMF8/s200/Kahuna.jpg

1966 was the “Summer of the Big Kahuna” – KHJ’s most creative and ambitious promotion yet. They created this mythical character, “The Big Kahuna” who legend had it had lost his precious stone in Los Angeles and was coming to find it. Along the way he’d be making personal appearances, giving away money, and be the centerpiece for several contests including a new car giveaway and a luau.

With great fanfare the Big Kahuna arrived at LAX. He was this large Hawaiian aborigine adorned in fur and beads and shells and feathers. In truth he was a crazy German whose father built the bunker Hitler died in.

[color=#000099]LA kids went along with the conceit. We flocked to the Big Kahuna’s appearances. God knows what he was smoking in the back of the KHJ prize van at high schools but the Big Kahuna became a local sensation. We followed his exploits on the air, saw him when we could, hoped he’d give us free money and maybe a hit off those funny cigarettes, and scrambled to be the 9th caller when we heard the “Kahuna cockatoo”. Winners were entitled to attend the big beach luau, and here’s how different things were t

Just a minor correction to John D’s nostalgia. WUFO was at 1080 on the AM dial. (1060 AM was KYW out of Cleveland). I spent my mid teens in Clarkson near the CHUM and CFRB transmitters. It was tough to hear anything in the middle of the dial with those two transmitters operating

Dale Patterson's most recent aircheck on the Scrapbook is of Dean Hagopian. The notes include a mention that Hagopian 'guested' on CHUM in 1968. My recollection is that CHUM ran a promotion over the weeks leading up to Jack Armstrong's debut as the evening jock. Each Sunday night, for four consecutive Sundays, a 'guest' deejay would host. The final candidate and winner was Jack Armstrong. In addition to Hagopian, I recall Terry David Mulligan 'auditioning', but neither Dale nor I can remember who the fourth candidate was. Any ideas out there?

Back in the very early '60s, my friends and I used to write to various stations requesting copies of their charts. Most responded positively. I did a bit of 'fake news' creating a WBZ Boston chart (they didn't publish one) that fooled all my friends. Think I had Carole King's "It might As Well Rain Until September" at #1. Highest listing for that song in North America
Great memories. Thnx to RadioActive

Oldies Alternative has shut down. It’s a shame. They have a very wide and long playlist with considerable  interest in the CHUM chart library. Does anyone kniw what’s behind  this decision?

Let me try to remember my 'early years' in Montreal.
Prior to CKGM in 1959, Montreal had pop/rock 'shows' as opposed to 'formats'.
Mike Stephens had a daily show on CJAD 800 from 4:00 PM till 5:00 PM. He also had 'Club 800' on Saturdays (often from Belmont Park). These shows were aimed at Teens and played the hit parade exclusively. Not sure what CFCF 600 was offering Teens at this time
On bilingual CKVL 850 Verdun (a Montreal suburb), Leo Lachance hosted a daily 'hit parade' show around 2:30 PM.
I believe that CJMS 1280 was licenced around the same time as CKGM. It had a 'hit parade' format, though broadcasting in French.

If you are talking about Canadian stations with Top Forty formats for most of the day, I think CHUM was first in May 1957. Red Robinson hosted 'shows' that played Rock n Roll music, first on CJOR in 1954, then on CKWX in 1957. CKWX followed CHUM to a Top Forty 'format' in 1958.

There may be a 'typo' in the Toronto Star article. If Armstrong was '32' at the time of the article, his year of birth would be 1935, not the 1945 stated in Dale's Rock Radio Heaven list. It would make more sense for him to be '22' at the time of this article given his comments about moving from night time radio by the age of 28.

Fortunately, the internet gives us a lot of choice.
I highly recommend "Oldies Project" and "Oldies Alternative".
