Here are the requirements. Technically PSIP IDs are not allowed (nor do they include the name of the city) but nobody complains about it. No idea why it is that radio stations insist on keeping this practice alive while their TV counterparts haven't been following the rules for over a decade. CBC Radio also rarely announces their callsigns. The whole practice is dated and serves little purpose when PSIP and RDS exist.

How come Z103.5 has only an HD-1? Nice tower up in the Caledon Hills...

That tower and escarpment view almost has if not better than CN Tower coverage.

In terms of land area, yes. In terms of population covered, no. They went HD to improve reception in Toronto.

I see good money in a classic country format. People who say it is too hard to sell a stand alone station to advertisers have no idea what they are talking about, at least not without being more clear on what "too little" is.

I hope what you mean is, the return on the investment will work out to less than minimum wage once the input of hours of effort are reviewed.

In this hypothetical CHCH/CKOC scenario: they would certainly, without a question of a doubt, lose at least $500k/yr for several years. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt and say by the time an audience and advertisers arrive (if ever) the band is not 10 feet under, they would at best have an operating margin of 0%, and that's generous given the average last year for Canadian English AM's was around -10%, and Toronto AMs were -5%. Also keep in mind the relatively large up-front capital required to out-bid the religious/multi-lingual groups who no doubt will want to buy CKOC.

You can live in a fantasy world where regular music and newstalk English AM radio has a future, but it does not, and the only reason it's kept afloat now is by co-existing with other (profitable) FM stations that can share staff and be sold to advertisers as one.

A marriage between CHCH and CKOC could work well.

No it wouldn't. Too costly for too little return. High risk, low reward. Hard to sell a standalone radio station to advertisers, much less a new AM station in a diary market that has no audience as it stands now.

paterson1 wrote:

Make the station similar to community/regional radio but on AM.

So you're saying they should operate a for-profit station like a not-for-profit station? And not only that, but do it on a worse band? Sounds like a recipe for failure.

The local cross promotion between TV and radio is something that other Hamilton stations don't have.

Not sure what benefit you think this has? CHCH has given up on primetime, what exactly are they to promote? They're the only news option in town, they don't need to promote on radio, and if they wanted to they could buy radio spots for far less than the cost of acquiring and running an AM station that nobody listens to.

paterson1 wrote:

Because it is 2023 is the exact reason why new ideas should happen.  The current model doesn't work and companies like Bell have been shown not to be the best at running radio stations.  And please, spare us the stock answer of "if it were feasible, it would have been done.."  If Bell knew what was feasible I doubt they would have bought CTV for $2.3 billion in 2003, sell most of it a few years later, and then turn around and buy the network back again.  Nothing like paying for something twice.

-Says it's 2023 and new ideas are needed
-Brings up an idea straight from the 1950s
-Thinks the same company that dances with bankruptcy every few years should invest in a band that is declining rapidly
-Lambasts a decision made 20 years ago

I hate to break it to you, but it would be the same people in charge of radio even if these large radio groups weren't

It’s the best it can be without reducing the quality of the main classical signal, which would be a really bad idea.

If you're only running two HD feeds, you can actually set both of them to 48 kbps, but my guess is they don't have enough spectrum with both 2nd adjacent frequencies on the same tower: 98.7 (their own) and 95.9 (KX repeater). Totally guessing as I don't see why else they wouldn't run it at 48 if they could.

I was thinking it would be 99.9 for Toronto  (they could get some stray CBC Radio One listeners just a wee hair down the dial at 99.1); however I don't think it would be a straight transfer of 1010 to FM.  Perhaps, over a period of time, some Newstalk hosts wouls simulcast on FM or even move to it, while less hours are devoted to CHR on Virgin.  640 did such a thing in the 90s, of course with the intention they were going to be an all news station.  Eventually, you'd have a full-service FMer with talk and lifestyle, plus some music programming.

Just a thought though.  As for 610, could soome of its stronger programming not go on to 102.9?  Very little of CKTB is live any more.

You've hit the nail on the head. Every media executive is currently thinking "whatever barely worked in the 90s will certainly work in 2023"

I honestly believe there must have been another way, but Bell wasn't even remotely interested in exploring what it might be.

While still sad..... as P1 and RadioAaron noted, there were 910 positions eliminated. The majority of those would've come from the Bell phone/internet side, which we can safely assume is a lot less niche compared to AM radio.

No the NHL is not screwed, in fact their current deals are proving to be a very big improvement over their deal with NBC. Look at the NBA, TNT will often out perform ABC in the conference finals. OTA doesn't matter to young people, most won't even know what the difference is. If they're fans of the sport, they'll find it.

That's interesting. My predictions.....
Rogers - CHFI-HD 2 and 3 will take over CFTR and CJCL from CKIS. Resulting in lower fees for them at FCP.
Corus - CILQ-HD2 will repeat CFIQ. CFNY won't have any HD.
CBL-HD 2 and 3 will repeat CJBC-FM and AM.
Bell - No change, CKFM already has both their AMs on it in addition to country
CJRT - No change. Nothing to gain by adding one. Maybe they'll use it for higher audio quality given their format/genre?
CHBM - No change. Nothing for them to put on it.
CHIN - Probably cram 3-4 sub-channels with various languages on HD.

But if these numbers are correct, despite all the options available, including a host of streaming services and platforms like YouTube, it's astounding one broadcast could ever attract that many eyeballs at once.

Two important caveats:

1. This figure includes streaming. The traditional broadcast network viewers were almost certainly lower than previous high performing broadcasts.

2. This includes out of home viewing (bars, restaurants, etc) whereas Super Bowl ratings prior to 2021 do not. The 2015 and 2018 Super Bowls would surpass 2022 if their out of home viewership was included.

Two vastly different markets, and 1150's proximity to 1050 did not help them. Their transmitters were only 50 km's apart, so a lot of listeners could've transitioned from one to the other very easily.

Hamilton = 1 sports team from "big six" league (do not own the team)
Toronto = 5 sports teams from "big six" league (4 of which they co-own)

Without a doubt. The new rendition gives a song like that new life. However, since there's no incentive to play that version here we're stuck with the original version, and as a result it continues on a downward trajectory. The original will continue to be played for years to come in Canada while the US will bail on it well before us. All because of our excessive CanCon regulations.

Here we are in 2023 and it is still being played many times radio stations like Z103.5, Virgin Radio, CHUM 104.5, Kiss 92.5 etc and across the US. This maybe a reason why. According to the Wikipedia article it says.

"In 2022, the song experienced a resurgence in popularity, due to the online social media application TikTok. Therefore, the song impacted US radio, achieving a new peak within the top ten of the Hot 100. On February 24, 2023, the Weeknd released a remix of "Die for You" with American singer Ariana Grande, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated March 11, 2023."

Yes I know some people might find this song overplayed many times on the radio but when it is played almost all the time I switch it to a different station.

Under the current regulations it will continue to be overplayed for 10 years as it's Canadian content. The Ariana Grande version is not, hence why that one is not played here as frequently. I agree.... I reach for the car radio whenever it comes on.

Some math on the back of a napkin shows it would cost over $50k US to send a single MLB radio announcer on the road for a season. Even then, people would complain there's no colour analyst which would add another 20+ thousand. The increased revenue from having someone on the road is $0. It's simple math folks.
