A loss can be applied to taxable profit earned elsewhere in a similar business.  What is the nature of the owner of CFAJ's other successful/profitable operating businesses?

Immigration is their main business in Mississauga.

There are lots of us SOWNY members who are currently active in radio.

I appreciate the views and information on this board. Too bad not everyone feels the same about open and free flowing opinions and facts.

If the CRTC does grant the "Maxcasting" request, you have to wonder if others won't follow suit. We certainly know that Evanov has been frothing at the mouth to try and get Pride FM and 103.5 wider signals into the GTA. Perhaps this could be a way for them to accomplish that.

This is worth keeping a real close eye on because it has implications far beyond CFXJ.

I'm very sceptical that Maxcasting won't have any effect on degrading adjacent signals. When I read the submission, their analog rebroadcast is 285 watts max ERP with the beam toward the west.

Also in the submission to the CRTC, they claim there could be some interference, especially with older analog car radios. Stingray proposes they replace your radio with a new digital one. (I should buy an 80's or earlier car and take them up on that)

Luckily CFMU is vertically polarized FM signal, and transmitter set on Hamilton mountain near the escarpment edge with a power of 166W.

The lake is also helpful. Once I listened to CFMU on Toronto island (like MACE, reasonable by DX standards)

When did they get an increase to 166 watts? They were 50 watts for years. When I lived in west Oakville, I had access to an outdoor Wineguard antenna. If I received anything "listenable" on 93.3, it was WWSE in Jamestown.

I've been with CFMU since 2004, and as far as I can remember in my time with them is they were 166 watts. (I lived in West Toronto [right on the lake] with an outdoor antenna and heard CFMU [with some static, but fair] from my location).

Loved the programing there and started with them shortly after.

CRTC will need to address this issue, and make a condition of approval that rebroadcast only contain originating programming, no seperation (even by commercials)

I wouldn't be surprised if the market players comment on this in submissions to the commission (seeing as the initial submission doesn't touch the subject, yet a prevailing feature of Maxcasting...) Left unchecked, it can hurt other broadcasters ad sales by localized encroachment.

I'm interested in hearing more from other board members on this issue as this is new technology and should be discussed.

RadioAaron wrote:

Yeah, the separate commercials things is neat, but likely not worth the complication - and I'd agree I don't think the CRTC would love it. Stingray will keep this to simple coverage fill-in in order to get approved.

I'm hoping campus community stations such as the one I program at (CFMU 93.3 FM) (and additionally, CFRU FM) are not harmed by the Mississauga rebroadcast.

From what I understand, maxcasting also allows the broadcast undertaking to advertise differently from each secondary transmitter. (Not information Stringray has included in their technical submission)(hopefully the CRTC will address this in review)

Sadly, no. They wound down a few years back. Now I have to drive to Radioworld (an OK shop, but located at Buttfuck Nowhere in Toronto) if I need radio stuff.

Edit - Durham Radio was in Twitby.

Does this mean it's already in use?

If so, where is it deployed?

I started in radio at CHRY 105.5 FM at York U. I was a co-op student/volunteer and hosted News at Noon and News at 5 broadcasts around 1992. I was 15 years old. This wasn't my first choice of assignments but did it happily at winter/spring term. I joined 105.5 as they were legendary for hip-hop, which I graciously do now at CFMU 93.3 (been so for 18 years). I've also served up some decent beats at CHSR 97.9 in Fredericton NB (in the late 90's/early 00's)

Good point.

I may just call the station if I get some time this week and ask.

Here in Hamilton (upper mountain of city). Surprised there is zero reception of WBLK or CKOU, just static.

I enjoy(ed) having 'BLK to turn to for urban programming (as 93.5 CFXJ is nulled by 93.3 CFMU)

It's brutal when you can receive a signal OTA but can't access an app because of geography.

So, I can assume (by the responses) that Bounce won't be on another subcarrier (in Buffalo)?

Where's Bounce bouncing to now on the Buffalo tv dial.

I remember them on a subcarrier of channel 4 at one time, currently on subcarrier of 23.

I like retro tv, but I'm in Hamilton and get a fair fill on CHCH.

I'm hoping not to lose Bounce, as it has programming that isn't anywhere else (not even on cable). Sort of sad, really.

So, what's next? Anyone know?

I listen from Hamilton to CJRU occasionally. At night is brutal and weak, daytime is fair most days.

I am using a Sangean HD AM/FM digital tuner which also helps. (Can receive 530 new HD clearly)

On the subject of broadcast HD AM in general, it does help reception and listening area. The sound is fairly close to FM. Using AM HD hybrid seems to be the best option, as you still have the analog signal in addition to the HD.

It's a shame CJRU couldn't have 250 watts (day and night), this way the listenability of the signal would be somewhat better in the core area of Toronto, and perhaps better for fringe listeners like myself (the transmitter is near the pier in downtown east if I'm correct)
