SOWNY » What Would CHUM & CFRB Have Done If This Had Happened? » February 14, 2017 2:23 pm |
When a radio station in the city experiences a crisis, and can't broadcast from their own studios, I believe the idea is that the competition can offer up an extra studio for temporary use.
Not sure if that's set in stone somewhere in the Canadian Radio Constitution or what.

That's hilarious! And ironic given the thread's subject line. So we are abandoning the topic because it's Christmas Eve Eve. We'll resume regular broadcasts on the 27th. Thanks for the laugh.
I knew you'd get a laugh out of that. ;)
Now go listen to more of your revered 1010, where today Agar forgot that Rogers owns the Blue Jays, and had to bring his producer on for assistance. Good thing all those hosts are fully prepared on their talking points.
Ah shit, you tricked me into commenting.
MMMmmmmm, spotted dick with some grilled.cheese? Now THAT'S a feast! Talk to you Friday afternoon, grilled.

Good to see that 1010 is chaste when it comes to your golden rule. The difference, good Sir, is those conversations are the exception in minimal banter. The other station has them chime in CONSTANTLY! They often are used more than the host and add reflectively nothing to the mix. CFRB's producer interjections add something relevant; the other station simply sounds like a free-for-all of some sort of college rave where people blurt out whatever comes to mind. This trend signals the host's inability to carry the show by themselves.
I just edite out all the witty crap I had just written after realizing that I actually don't care enough tonight to keep this back and forth going.
It's Christmas Eve... eve. Time to share joy with those around you.

Given the multicultural aspect of the city, certainly there are starving radio hosts that would love a shot on a major market station. It's a shame that the only actual talk station, 1010, doesn't realize this. I exclude 640 as it frequently has producers, interns, building janitorial staff etc filling in. Maybe they can't do a show without a bunch of stooges and yes men in the background shouting and laughing like college kids during this Christmas break.
Good thing 1010 doesn't allow any of their producers on air, cGrant. Oh, wait. Afternoon host Ryan Doyle jumped from long-time producer, chiming in on-air, to host. Technical Producer Robert Turner is featured on-air in the mornings. Agar will banter with his producer. Ted chats up his producer (one could argue his producer talks more than he does sometimes).
Good to see that 1010 is chaste when it comes to your golden rule.

Anthony,
Mistakes in... Newscasts? Playing Slipknot instead of Celine Dion? Putting on the wrong callers? Not prepping enough? Talking about "grabbing p***y" without realizing the mic is hot (Topical Trump joke)? Criticizing a business before remembering that they're the station's biggest advertiser?

Hey Miker,
Big fan! Every third weekend of May, I gather with my closest family members for a Reach For the Top marathon. The Tagwi Secondary battle of 1989 is a personal favourite.
Can't wait for tomorrow. What happens if a REAL emergency occurs during the test? Will they interrupt the test with an actual alert broadcast? Wouldn't that confuse the public, causing most people to ignore the legitimate warning?
Hoping all goes well tomorrow.

Working with THE best radio personality this side of The Milky Way Galaxy has taught me quite a few things about screening calls.
Many consider the role to be less important than the office cleaners who soak up the accumulated spittle from around the mics at the end of every broadcast day.
After having spent some time behind the mic, working with other screeners, I've learned just how damn important a GREAT screener is.
There's a flow to a topic, to a show. Weak callers disrupt that flow. A screener's job is to eliminate the pests, and keep the best - by ANY means necessary.
It's nobody's RIGHT to have their say on privately owned and operated airwaves. You don't need to provide a caller with a valid reason as to why you don't want to grant them audience with the Great and Powerful Oz.
A good producer will not:
1. Pay ANY attention to their smartphone, unless it's related to the show they're working on (connecting with a guest). Distracted Driving, meet distracted screening. Doing either one can lead to disastrous consequences!
2. Talk to a caller for more than 15 seconds. Get the calls racked up. Don't engage in friendly chit-chat. Your job is to connect the caller with the host, not to engage in your own personal radio show behind the scenes. Nothing is more frustrating for a host than to see a screener engaged in a minutes-long chat with a caller while other lines are either ringing or sitting on hold. Being brief with a caller also avoids the "as I said to your screener" opener, and ensures that a caller's content is fresh and original. You should be able to determine a caller's potency seconds into their pitch. Some producers gab on with the callers to boost their own ego and soak up attention (which happens from time to time, but should never interfere with the show)
3. Keep a rotten caller on hold, instead of dropping them. If you have no intention of putting a caller on air, why are they still on the line? Drop them. Tell them th

Old, C O L D Codger, are you including "enlightened" CBC... Aka Corrupt Bloated Corporation... listeners in that bunch as well? Much of CBC Radio One's programming is TALK... radio.
Or are THEY yet A N O T H E R 'exception' to THE rule? You seem to have a lot of those...
You mention McCown as being one of those that CAN, and therefore DO. I have seen some commenters in the online realm argue that over the last few years, he hasn't really DONE much of anything on his show, is mailing it in, and should therefore... teach... Or, by your logic, continue to host talk radio.

"But on Wednesday, Honickman was gone and producers Ryan Bonner and Lyndsey Vanstone were taking that slot. They did an OK job, but I’m not sure that’s who you want hosting the most important real estate in radio."
That was actually Tuesday.
"But it didn’t stop there. Kelly Cutrara, normally the afternoon drive host, was suddenly subbing for Jeff MacArthur during his 2-4 PM slot. MacArthur, incredibly, was subbing for Cutrara, who was subbing for him! Why they would change the drivetime host when she was obviously available isn’t clear."
Incorrect. Kelly did not fill in for Jeff.

Seriously people, G I V E your 'head' a SHAKE. THIS industry "makes a few but breaks YOU".... .... If you're NOT in THE Big S M O K E, the big town HOKEY POKE, you are 'lucky' to get the peel from the PD's banana at the end of every work day as your pay.
There is N O T H I N G good ABOUT the radio industry AT ALL "anymore". When THIS GUY had his finger in the PIE (back when Dick "I've Got a Trick" S M Y T H was ending lives with a toss of his typewriter) there were enough slices to go around! Now.... ..... Those 10-inch pies HAVE become 2-inch TARTS.
In all seriousness though, I'm no Old Codger, but have found growing success thanks to talent (debatable), effort, attitude and luck in a fairly large market.
Old Codger is correct when it comes to "paying your dues". Hard to do that when programming options outside of the weekday morning/afternoon drive are few and far between. In many cases where those small shifts in the evenings or on weekends are available, they do not pay. You're told that your payment is the experience gained, which is cheap, dirty, and demeaning. Anything to keep the budget down and the shareholders happy.

Would that not be an insult to the other hosts, who have all had experience covering important issues?

perhaps the TTC will do what go transit has done and introduce "quiet zones" to subway trains? for those passengers who don't want to listen to 18 phone calls at once, they can enjoy a quiet ride on the back half of the train. but then how do you enforce that?
