The bad news is there was a shooting at Pearson airport this morning.  The worse news is Hank Gazinga (sp) has been on 640 with Frankish for what seems an eternity.  Nothing against the guy, but just repeating how lucky we are to have such heroic and wonderful women and men in blue really doesn't add anything to the story.

I've got so much to say to them.
Can hardly wait to sit with them in a crowded theatre for three hours watching a stage show and not talking.
To a pair who make their living from talking.

They probably look forward to not talking.  I know I look forward to them not talking.  Win-win!

The alternative prize option is a Jiffy App 'Expert', to come to your home and Windex the dog nose marks off your windows.  A 6 dollar value!

There's good news and bad news on that front!

The good news: The new Spence spots started airing on Tuesday (endlessly, of course) and Fiona announced her work is "done" and she's leaving.

The bad news: unfortunately, she threatens to keep in touch "by phone."

With any luck, the room full of monkeys that 'write' the Spence drivel will just forget she ever existed.

The producer and technical director share the same space as Frankish. You are hearing background noise, which, in my opinion, is less irritating than Kevin's rambling about nothing. 640 misses Greg in ways it could not have predicted. The temporary host has no opinions, no pushback, no grit...nothing but smiles and happy talk for everyone who appears on the show. Blandness works on morning television but not a conservative talk radio station. I hope Greg wins his seat in Ajax, but hopefully, either way, this is a temporary host situation at 640. It is too good a station to start the day on a boring note, and Ben deserves a better lead-in show.

A start to improving the show would be to drop ex-cop Hank Bazinga, or whatever his name is.  His appearances have to be the most boring thing on Toronto morning talk radio.  Immediate channel changer.

I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but I keep hearing someone else talking in the background on Alex Pierson's AM640 show (filling in for Ben Mulroney.) It's intermittent and you can't quite make out what the other voice (a male) is saying, but why would this be happening?

I suppose she could be doing the show from home and it could be family noise. Or leakage from another studio if she's at Corus Quay. But it's very weird and very noticeable.

What could be causing it?

It's just the sound of somebody trying to get a word in edgewise over the great interrupter.

The Speech From The Throne, the traditional start-up of every federal or provincial government in Canada, was read at Queen's Park on Tuesday.

It is, as Scott Reid noted on a NT1010 segment in the morning, not only one of the dullest documents to write (which he did on several occasions) but an absolute snooze-fest to read out loud, one of the chores for whoever is occupying the role of Lt.-Governor.

Back in 2007, that was the late, great David Onley, a broadcaster who worked at CFRB, CFTR and most memorably, as the City TV weatherman. I was lucky enough to work with David at several stations and a nicer man you could will never meet. He was simply beloved by everyone.

One day, long after his political tenure ended, I visited with him at U. of T., where he was a lecturer. I asked him about the infamous Speech, where the government lays out its plans for its time in office.

He gave me a look of boredom and told me hated reading the thing. It was usually dozens and dozens of pages long, as dull as counting sheep and as it droned on and on and on and on, even he worried he would fall asleep. I asked him how he got through it.

And he told me one of my all time favourite lines, something he learned only too well in broadcasting. He said, "At one point, around the first hour, I seriously thought of putting down the document and saying "And we'll be right back with more after this word from our sponsor!"

I would have paid good money to see that, but of course it never happened. But he told me he was sorely tempted every time he had to read one of those things.

He was a great guy and I'm sure I speak for all who knew him that he's very much missed. He passed away in 2023. Or maybe he's just in a long sleep from having to read the Speech. Either way, we will not see this kind of wonderful soul again. But every time there's a Speech From The Throne, I think of him throwing to commercial! If only (Or should that be if Onley?)

(Credit to the Toronto Star & Hamilton Spectator for that news blurb. Likewise, CHCH in Hamilton also reported it.)

No wonder so many former media types jump to politics.  Better money, gold-plated benefits and less work.

It must work.  Next time I have to go online to hire an 'expert' to clean some dog snot off my lower windows, that any stiff with some Windex and roll of paper towels could do in 2 minutes, I'll race to Jiffy-App, just like John Moore.

You can't 'rightsize' your way to prosperity. Talent is talent and getting rid of Kelly Cutrara, Alan Carter and Farah Nasser did them no favours. On radio (640) they have skewed so far right (nothing wrong with 'right' per se) that the tone is vitriolic. As for Global TV there is some talent but Alan and Farah's replacements have watered the wine IMO.

Agree that 640 skews right politically, but so does just about all talk radio.  Kevin Frankesh, the recent replacement for federal conservative candidate Greg Brady, is pretty moderate by radio standards.  It's kind of a welcome relief to hear a host who isn't always frothing at the mouth.  Hope he stays on.

To be fair - and I'm not defending Lanstman per se - all politicians of all parties do this. They're taught very early on: "Answer the question you wish you'd been asked."

That's why it's so frustrating to talk to any of them. Sometimes I wonder why reporters even bother.

Bang on RA!  I wish that it would be illegal for politicians to hire strategists and the like, or to stick to talking points as a means of deflecting questions.  If you're serving the public, answer the darned question you're asked.

Of course, for this to be more effective for creating mutually beneficial discourse, the general public would also need to hear beyond headlines and sound bites.

Yep. Knowing you're being spun is as important as the spin itself. (My favourite tell is when they say "Thank you for that question," which generally means they've been prepped for it - but still won't answer it - or they're really pissed off that you asked it but will find a way not to answer it at all.)

We are not well-served by our politicians, but our politicians are very well-served by themselves.
