It's also the 25th anniversary of the Y2K non-disaster, but we sure went through a lot of panic, wondering if the lights were going to go out at midnight Jan. 1st, 2000...
Back in the 1990s, David J. Smith was a fundie preacher (ex insurance salesman) whose 'Newswatch Magazine' radio program ran weeknights on WWKB 1520, 10-10:30 p.m. Very much in the style of Herbert W. Armstrong, besides government and spiritual conspiracies Smith believed that Y2K was the upcoming end of civilization.
That belief didn't stop him from trying to get listeners to buy a yearly subscription to his magazine as near as a few weeks before the date of Y2K.

I hold the thoroughly unsubstantiated view that most children who follow their parents into the same career generally fall short of the parent's' accomplishments.
This is generally less harmful to the 'greater good' in broadcasting than in politics. And I was saying that long before 2015.

CHML AM at least ran old time radio shows straight through from Christmas Eve afternoon, right through Christmas Day. That gave a majority of the staffers time off. This year, they'll be offering holiday static. π

I had occasion to listen to Jack Kruezer's sports report this morning on WBFO FM, and was surprised at the mechanical cadence it seemed to have. Is it possible that although he is listed as a 'Junior Multimedia Reporter / Play-By-Play Voice' at the WBFO web page, they are using AI? Possibly some editing program that makes for a clunky report?
Listen here, and see what you think:
The Scoreboard, December 16.
His biography at the website says Kruezer is a singer and actor as well. π€

There's a subset of older callers who seem to just dial in and hope they'll have a clue. Afternoon drive program on AM 740 showcases this.

The facts seem similar to those that befell the final version of 710 AM in Niagara Falls in the early 2000s. The station was broadcasting material outside of the regulations. Listeners were then stuck if they were relying upon the station for their daily fix of Historica Canada.

Along these lines, I recall working with plenty of tradespeople originally from the UK, who weren't amused when you showed up with an oxy-acetylene cutting torch, when they had requested their version of a torch. A flashlight.

Especially McCartney's 'Wonderful Christmastime'.Or Marshmello World which was originally recorded by Bing Crosby in 1950 but there are numerous versions by other artists. I cringe and my teeth start to ache when I hear any version of this saccharin sweet tune. Technically, it isn't even a Christmas song because the holiday is never mentioned in the lyrics.
'Marshmallow World' by Dean Martin, along with his version of 'Let It Snow' always were tolerable to me. They also struck me as having been recorded when he had a few. π
I mentioned in a different thread that it was only in the last few years that I had heard the Waitresses 'Christmas Wrapping'. Another contributor observed that I obviously hadn't worked retail.

I drove delivery truck for a home freezer plan / grocery business 45 years ago, and the owner saw a place for 'in house' competition from a second company, specifically catering to disaffected past customers of the original company. Unpainted trucks, and unlabelled boxes of meat and groceries, all from the same warehouse and freezer plant. Not even new drivers were hired, just ship both companies products in the same unmarked trucks.

Imaging, flow of music, bad cut ins, if I need to say anything more, clearly you have not tuned in at all to this station.
One of the worst offenders is when they go to ads, then the last ad overlaps into the station id sometimes. (hopefully they fixed that glitch)

Just witnessed another gem this morning (I might have a new drinking game lol):
While trying to explain that the term is called "Daylight Saving" (correct) versus "Daylight Savings" (incorrect), Mr. Perkins' explanation for this is because it's only one hour that's affected. Uhh, no; it'sΒ because "daylight" is an unquanttfiable and cannot be pluralized - much like "sky" versus "skies".
So while I applaud them for trying to correct the widely-misused phrase of "Daylight Savings", his reasoning was amateurish at best.
I recall a protracted email exchange I had with one of the weekend weather forecasters at WIVB, after she proclaimed on a Sunday years ago that "we gained an hour of daylight today." All sorts of nastiness ensued after I sent her an email correcting the gaffe. She stuck in her heels in defending her phrasing.
SOWNY » CHML Action Line, CKLP intro music » November 2, 2024 9:28 am |
Tom Cherrington's early evening call in show was often on in my parents' home. The show had a distinct introductory music theme, heavy on brass and strings. Eventually, Cherrington moved over to television, and that was the last of that theme.
Years later visiting relatives 'up north', I discovered that the early 1990s version of CKLP in Parry Sound was using the music to front their newscast, in an era when it was truly a small town local service radio station.
Can anyone point me in the direction of that audio that was used? Thank you.
