Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

Impressive that he guaranteed admission to the next round by getting as close as possible to 100 without going over.

If you have a VPN set to the U.S., you can rewatch the entire Barker years on The Price Is Right on Pluto TV.

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

The last words he wanted to hear while he died..."Bob Barker, come on down!."

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

He never had kids.

Must have been all that spaying and neutering...

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

Considering Barker's stance on animal rights and that he quit hosting the Miss America pageant over their insistence on giving away fur coats as a prize, it's incredible to watch the original TPIR episode from 1972.

The first prize ever offered "up for bids" on the show - a fur coat!

There were some reasons on why GSN back in the mid to late 1990’s were not allowed to re air some episodes with fur coats.

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

I found it interesting some of the products given away are no longer needed. A sewing machine, electric typewriter, encyclopedia. And that car with only AM radio? TPIR for most of its run has aired in either the 10:30 or 11am time slot. However, in 1973 and 1974 it had a successful run at 3pm as a lead in to Match Game.

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

Another amazing thing about the show - in 51 years, it's still using pretty much the exact same theme song and incidental music. It was composed by Score Productions and has certainly withstood the test of time. I can't think of another long running show that's done that.

But there is one big change from the beginning. If you watched that very first episode, you'll see that famous "Come on Down!" wasn't originally used off the top. Instead, they asked the future contestants to "Stand up!" and then come to the stage.

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

Gene Rayburn wasn't his real name.

Richard Dawson married a family member of one of his "Family Feud" contestants.

And Alex Trebek had a clear voice but was frequently "horse."

Edd Kalehoff composed / created the majority of the music cues as well as the main theme for TPIR.  Kalehoff made extensive use of the Moog synthesizer, and studio session musicians for cues that had a more orchestral sound.

The main theme "Come on Down" while written/composed by Kalehoff is credited to Susan Cole. Cole was the wife of Score founder Bob Israel. Israel is said to have duped or pulled a fast one on Kalehoff when he asked him to allow Susan Cole to be credited as the composer of "Come on Down" on the promise that there was more production work coming from Goodson * Todman.  The "Come on Down" cues and their variants are the most used music cues on TPIR, and Susan Cole gets the royalty each time they are played, not Kalehoff.

RA mentioned the first episode where Johnny Olson called the contestant's name followed by "Standup".  The producers were worried that the audience members would not hear their name being called, so they did not use the audience vamp music cue...  the music bed was not fed to the studio PA/foldback speakers.  After the first taping, it was felt that the open was a bit flat, so the music vamp was added. Announcer Johnny Olson is credited as changing "Standup" to the now familiar "Come on Down", and apparently it was an ad lib on the part of Olson.

CBS will be airing a special one-hour tribute to Barker on Thursday, Aug. 31st at 8 PM. Appropriately, Drew Carey will host.

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

I completely forgot about Bob's tribute last night.  Look's like it had respectable ratings for CBS and performed well in the 18-49 demo.  http://www.thetvratingsguide.com/2023/09/thursday-tv-ratings-83123-price-is.html

Not too late to see it. I recall reading that it will be rerun on Monday morning in the normal TPIR timeslot on CBS @11 AM.

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

He literally suffered in silence from Alzheimer's disease when it took his life. Well, that and he was 99.

Price Is Right host secretly battled Alzheimer's disease before he passed away aged 99

Re: Bob Barker dead at 99

There’s a proposal to rename a portion of LA’s famous Sunset Boulevard after Bob Barker.

It’s coming from PETA.
