I heard a Canadian Press newscast at around 3 p.m. on AM 640 today. There was no news sounder and it was much shorter than the usual four minutes, maybe about half that. Is this just a weekend thing or have all CP newscasts been shortened?

i think that was one of their bottom of the hour short updates being played 30 minutes later. I've heard them do this before.

AFAIK, CP issues a 4-minute top of hour cast (3m of news + 1m of sports) and a 1-minute update for the bottom of an hour.

CP has always had two versions of their newscast. A 4:00 version (3 minutes of news plus 1 minute of sports with a short pause between the 2 in case stations wanted to break away after 3:00). And a :60 version, probably meant for the bottom of the hour or stations who didn't want to do a full 4:00 package.

They got rid of the music about 5 years ago. Maybe a cost cutting move to save on SOCAN fees. Many stations now put their in their own news bumper before the CP newscast.

Yes, CP does a four minute version and a one minute version.
Also they got rid of their own specialized music intros and extros because apparently subscribers did not want them any more.
Also their rights to the music had to be renewed.
The Canadian Press newscasts are an odd animal.
They have to be careful to be suitable to all formats, be it rock, middle of the road, talk, etc, so they cannot develop their own signature "sound."
The other side is that listeners get highly reliable news information.
The Canadian Press content is second to none in integrity and authenticity.
