I well remember the dangers of putting a reporter out in the field live in the middle of a crazed crowd. It’s dangerous enough with security nearby, but without it, anything can happen.
And it did on CFTO’s local 11:30 PM news on Friday night, when Sean Leathong was outside the Dome immediately after the Jays' Game 1 win. Fans were shrieking, yelling and jumping up and down, with Leathong interviewing them. And of course, one of them dropped the F-bomb, prompting the red faced reporter to apologize to viewers for the “colourful” language.
But that was nothing compared to what happened during that first hit. A possibly drunken jackass jumped in front of Leathong, tried to get in front of the camera and began to push him out of frame.
To his credit, the veteran TV newsman was having none of it. In a remarkable moment of live and unplanned television, he got a huge scowl on his face and without saying a word, he physically shoved the lout out of the way, looking like he was about to get into a confrontation with him.
Luckily, the guy got the message and was perhaps subdued off camera and he didn’t return. Leathong, to his credit, didn’t miss a beat and returned to his post-game shtick with a smile plastered back on his face.
What a great unguarded moment of live TV and angry emotion you don’t see very often.
