It Had To Happen Eventually: Same Guest At The Same Time On 640 & 1010

I guess this was going to eventually happen thanks to the miracle of pre-recording. On Thursday night, just after the 8 PM news, Shane Hewitt on CFRB and the iHeart Radio Network had on a special guest, tech expert Carmy Levy. He was talking about technology as it was in 1989.

Meanwhile, over on AM640 at the exact same time, David Cooper was talking technology with --- you guessed it, Carmy Levy. One or both was pre-recorded, but it was odd to hear the same guest being interviewed, supposedly in real time, on two different stations in the same market at the exact same time.

It's probably happened before, but I don't recall it being so blatant.

It wouLd be fascinating to witness the manner in which you consume terrestrial radio, on a daily basis, RA. 👍

I heard John Moore actually give a mention to Q107 one morning, just before he went on vacay.  Maybe a sign of detente between players in an industry that is under siege.

It's not as unusual as it sounds. I switch between stations all the time. I heard Cooper on 640 promote Carmy Levy returning after the 8 PM news. They went to spots early, so I tuned over to CFRB, which at that moment was also promoting Carmy Levy as their next guest when they came back from their own headlines.

So naturally I had to stay tuned to both to see if this strange confluence of one guest in two places at once would come to pass. And it did.

Somehow, the world did not come to an end and time did not collapse in on itself, so I think we dodged a bullet!

I've seen this on tv quite regularly, especially on the Sunday morning news program that usually contain a lot of interviews taped on the Thursday or Friday.

The only people that care about this stuff are the people in the industry, the audience could not care less. "Don't mention the competition" is old-world-media-think.

It shows that, in a city/region of millions, our talk stations are casting a wide net for guests.

Also correct. Producers get lazy and go with the "easy get". Understandable as most of them could be producing multiple shows a day and can't devote 100% their time to one show.

Hosts can also have blinders on and keep asking for the same repeat guests, as if there are no other shows on which they could appear.

Totally. I heard an announcer on Indie 88 today say he first heard the song he just played on CFTR in the 80s. Relatable.

A few hours after 1010 & 640 simultaneously had the same guest on at the same time, came a reroll of Ben Mulroney's show on 640. One of the segments from earlier that day involved a familiar voice. You guessed it - Carmy Levy!

They might as well just give the guy his own show!

Maybe, but one of the most memorable things I ever heard on radio involved this "inviolable" rule.

It happened one afternoon on WNBC-AM in New York around 1977. It was in the winter, so the station was coming in here during afternoon drive. The late, great Bob Vernon, aka "Vernon With A V" was doing the go-home show on 660 opposite the legendary Dan Ingram on the still highly rated WABC.

Sometime after the 5 PM hour, after a commercial break, listeners heard the singing PAMS ID "Dan Ingram!"

That was followed by a 77 WABC jingle. On WNBC!

I could not believe what I'd just heard and after it aired, Vernon came back on and in his deepest announcer voice intoned, "Dan Ingram is not here. Nor do we know where you can find him. Thank you."

Into a WNBC jingle and back to music.

I was in hysterics, stunned beyond words that they'd just done that. Not only did they break the supposed "you can't do that" rule, they smashed it to pieces.

I never found out why he did it, but almost half a century later, I've never forgotten it. I only wish there was a recording of it somewhere. It was hilarious.

Back when CHML was still on the air, it seemed like Marvin Ryder, from McMaster's DeGroote School of Business was the only expert in Hamilton able to comment on business.

The other business professionals were busy working.

Carmi Levy is very accessible and is fantastic to talk to about all things technology. Back over 15 years ago when I was doing some print media work, I contacted him hoping to get his views about a story I was working on - I don’t even remember the topic. He replied to my email in barely 5 minutes and gave me a great quote I was able to use in my story. Really great guy, I can see why various media outlets like having him as a guest.

Wait until you hear the same commercial on two different stations at the same time. It'll knock your socks off!
I kid, I kid.

Yes, and "the guy," Tom Korski, also appears on Sauga960 AM on Friday mornings around 8:35 AM.

But the difference is he's not on all stations at the exact same time.

His segment airs Tuesday at 1:45 PM on AM640, Thursday at 11:30 AM on CFRB and again at 1:45 AM on 640, and as mentioned above, on Sauga960 at the end of the week.
