When SOWNY Had Its Own Facebook Page

I stumbled across this purely by accident on Thursday and never realized it was there. It predates my doing this by over a decade. It was The SOWNY Facebook Group, run by one of the guys who took over for Dale Patterson, the founder of this board, His name was Craig Smith and he was much beloved by many here. He was the moderator for many years before he passed away all too soon from complications of liver disease.

It's my understanding he was on a list for a transplant, but it didn't come soon enough. He was just 54 when he left us in Sept. 2008, and he's still sorely missed.

That's just one reason his Facebook page hasn't been updated since before then. But a cursory glance through it shows users bitching about how CFRB was going downhill - proving, I suppose that some things never change.

RIP Craig. Many of us here still miss you.

Craig was a good friend and a good guy.

Remember the SOWNY Show? It was on the Internet from Don Andrews'  Studio B every Monday from 7-8 p.m. Here's a show Craig did in 2007 with special guest David Marsden.

Hi RA.

Is it possible that Craig passed away at a later date than that?

I only ask as I recall having an email exchange with (I think) him in June 2010.

I was at the Ottawa International Airport (YOW) waiting for my flight home to Kitchener (there was a YKF-YOW route at the time with Bearskin Airlines) and I tried to access SOWNY on their Wi-fi but it was blocked as pornography.

When I emailed Craig, he was pretty amused by it, but couldn't figure out what about the site was being flagged.

I know June 2010 is the date this occurred, as I was in town for a conference, but perhaps it wasn't Craig.

Regarding his liver disease, it's a shame that all of this didn't occur many years later, as living liver donation is more common than it was then.

Regards,
Ron

I think you may be correct. It was 2010. I did an AI search which said 2008. Surprise! It was wrong.

This blog article from Lisa Brandt definitely shows the date as Sept. 2010.

Whenever it was, it was too soon.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting Craig in person, we became good friends online. I first came in contact with him in the "Don't say hello, say I listen to CHUM!!" Facebook group.  One of our favorite pastimes was playing music trivia back and forth and seeing who could stump the chump. For the most part, I was the chump, but I did manage to dethrone the master one time only (and I did savor the victory...lol). Craig was also very encouraging towards my internet radio station, which was in its infancy back then and not readily available much beyond the pages of Live365.com. At least there was one person other than myself listening to it at the time!

Miss you, Craig. You were one of radio's biggest fans, and many here were big fans of yours, too.
