"Bring Back The Kitchen Radio"

I enjoyed this nostalgia-tinged story that praises a long lost old time household necessity - the kitchen radio.

It instantly conjures memories of going to visit my wonderful grandparents, who lived on Parliament Street for decades. I have no idea the make, but they had a radio stuck up on a shelf in their kitchen, glued, it would seem, to CFRB. And my grandmother would listen to it when she did the cooking.

The author argues it may be time to bring these old classics back for nostalgia sake, if nothing else, adding you may still be able to find a real relic in a Value Village or Goodwill store. They were mini works of art you don't see anymore, because in addition to being a radio, they were made to be a part of the furniture.

I have a kitchen radio, but not like the ones in the story. It's simply an old Sangean that I turn on only occasionally. Nothing like the Bakelite original, some of which had tubes in them! Imagine trying to fix those today.

And even if this doesn't especially interest you, there's one great reason to click on the link - to see the full colour ad for the Crosley Shelvadoor refrigerator, which had a radio built right into the machine. They literally don't make them like that anymore!
