Rogers Cheaps Out On Its Own Tennis Tourney Coverage

The National Bank Open, which used to be called The Rogers Cup, is taking place the next few weeks in Montreal and Toronto. This used to be a pretty big deal, bringing in some of the best names in tennis. But the Toronto Sun complains that this year, Rogers seems to be cheapening out on its coverage of the annual event, the biggest such tourney in Canada.

"In what would seem to be a puzzling move to cut costs by Sportsnet – especially given owner Rogers long history with the event – viewers are being short-changed to the point of being embarrassing.

For the first week of action, anyway, Sportsnet is pulling in the ATP world feed to air on its platforms, a bare-bones production that is in stark contrast to what the network showed in the past and pays minimal attention to the stories that matter most to viewers here."

Sportsnet's coverage completely ignored covering the top ranked Canadian in the tournament, who lost and is now out. All this because the provider thought other matches were of more interest. In other words, there's some "love" lost between the network and viewers.

Rogers does intend to feature more local coverage on Sportsnet, but not until next week. By then, it's hard to say if there will be any Canadians left to cover.

Bingo.

Being a former Rogers employee I would say that you’re bang on! They’re a very presumptuous organization and are usually off target. Plus they’re very cheap, ask anyone that has worked for them. They would have failed if not part of a telco cartel.

This is what happens when you let the accountants call the shots.  I was wondering the other night why the National Bank Open wasn't in the top five trending shows on my cable.  Now I know why.  Even though Felix Auger Alliassime lost his match, many many more people would have watched had his game been covered.  Shame on Rogers.

Just curious. What were people watching on Bell. It is unfortunate that Bell only tracks the top 5. I think Rogers keeps track of all their channels. One day I was curious how long the tracking list was. I stopped at 125. CP24 and the Weather Network rarely leave the top 10. Of course, CP24 has an advantage. With all the bars, hospital emergency waiting rooms and doctor's offices having a tv set to CP24, the tracking doesn't necessarily show who is watching. However, it does show trends. Guaranteed, Live With Kelly, TPIR, and the Y&R are all top five every weekday.

Pretty much everything about Sportsnet is at a milquetoast, B-League level...from their cringey teleprompter reading 'sportscasters' to their studio intermission and halftime panel shows...it's all covered in cheap icing...so lame.

Those behind the tournament are apologetic that the Canadian match wasn't televised. But it seems a bit late for that.

Tennis is a niche sport these days. Popular mainly in Europe. The US Open is no longer a big deal.

OK, but if you're going to show a tennis tournament in Canada on one of the country's two national sports channels, at least show the biggest Canadian name.

Just another example of corporate incompetence.

Unfortunately Rogers hasn’t progressed much since their community programming days, nothing against community programming, that’s where I got my start! They’ve really screwed up on the NBO this year and I’m sure Sportsnet in hearing about it. They dropped the ball for sure.

Looks like Rogers may have lucked out with thanks to Victoria Mboko...my Sportsnet listings show proper coverage starting at 6pm today.
