The veteran radio talent has been through the ringer and was forced off the air a year ago to fight cancer.

Now he's taking another leave of absence, this time to get a bone marrow transplant he hopes may help put his health problems behind him for good.

“Basically on June 23rd, I will go into the hospital to put in a pick line…on the 24th they give me a high dose of chemo, which will kill a bunch of cells – all the cells good and bad, and what happens is on the 25th I will get my stem cells back,” explained Freeman, sharing that about six months ago they harvested and then purified his own stem cells looking ahead to this moment.

“And then you start regrowing your system. They call it your rebirth because essentially you’re like a baby, you have no immune system. You are susceptible to anything. So I’ll be in the hospital for about 16 days and you start to regrow your system. You regrow your bone marrow, you regrow your immune system...and hopefully in that process you are cancer free and I’m so excited about it. I’m just amazed by the science of it all.”

His last on air show will be Friday. No word yet on when he might return.

The Broadcast Dialogue article says he hopes to return in three months after June 25th.  I listened to Dan one day last week, and he sounded just like his old self.  Entertaining, funny, lots of personality.  Listened for about 90 minutes.   All the best Dan for a speedy recovery.  Hope to hear you again in late September or early October!

There is good news for fans of Tarzan Dan. He's well enough to return to the air and is coming back today, Oct. 23, as the afternoon host on the Bounce FM stations across the country.

It doesn't always end this way, so congratulations to the one time Toronto radio personality, who took time off for cancer treatment in June, including a stem cell transplant.
