I saw this at 6. I had the same sort of "what the f- is he wearing?" reaction as you did.

It's a weird thing about clothing on a TV newscast. Back when viewers still used their phones, as well, phones, I can't tell you the number of calls our newsroom switchboard used to get about what the anchors were wearing. And sadly, it would almost always, always be some terrible remark directed at the female reporter or anchor.

In those days before social media (which has generally made things worse) it was a really sad spectacle, especially if they were well dressed and looked great. But the critiques kept coming anyway and for no real reason. We kept copies of all the comments in those days, but encouraged our on air people not to look at them.

But I have to say the pic at the top of this thread is more than a bit odd. Where would you even buy something like that?

Someone on Big Yella snitched to Global that some of us here don't have a clue how complex weather patterns operate. I mean REALLY operate. This forecaster is totally acing his game, showing us weatherplebes how complex weather patterns work. Cold air from the east, mixed with heavy snow; warmer air aloft coming in from the west with mixed precipitation. Obviously dark skies, tight-fitting where the twain meet, arcing down from Renfrew/Ottawa and forming two troughs east of Buffalo. Don't know how all of this could be more obvious.

It's TV entertainment for cryin' out loud.
Weather presenters are notorious for pulling all kinds of stunts using props etc.
Why is this even being mentioned?

I think it's because City TV used to be the main source of going way off the wall.
Now we see it with Global and it comes as a bit of a shock that standard suit and tie weather reporting isn't what's being shown.
I think what's going on though, is that the weather person is trying to show that he's a centre scale person, not a Democrat or Republican. (with an American election coming up...)

Please don't bring partisan politics into this. Just stop. There was no need to bring that into discussion of what a frickin' CANADIAN weather reporter was wearing on-camera.

Speaking of bizarre forms of dress - or undress - on TV news.

It's not quite as far as Naked News used to go, but you can see it from there. It's not in the least appropriate, but they're doing it anyway. It may be the last thing you'd think you'd see in a place like Albania.

And what's with the noose? Is it a newsroom or a noose-room?

Very bizarre.

I saw the guy tonight on the 11:00 PM news. I wouldn't call it improper, just bizarre. Maybe it's what the Wardrobe Department gave him to put on.

I stand my ground. I meant what I said. Halloween is over. There is only ONE reason to wear a red and blue jacket. It's to show that he is not a Republican or Democrat. PERIOD. There is no other reason to do so.

If he is East Indian, it a big celebration time in that culture. This may be a choice of the young man to reflect that. If not, I admire his moxy. I thank Global for including northern Ontario in the weather coverage.

I believe he may, indeed, be of Indian origin.

I cannot believe that an otherwise obscure weatherman on a Canadian TV station would wear something to try and subtly comment on a U.S. election. It makes no sense.

Mic 'em's theory seems a bit more likely.

I think that he was dressed up for Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights, which was Friday, but the celebrations can often linger a bit. You may have heard or seen fireworks the last few evenings, all part of Diwali.

Speaking of what people wear on TV, this coincidentally showed up on Tuesday. I'm hardly a fashion plate (jeans and a radio or TV T-shirt are my go to) but I'm continually amazed some viewers pay so much attention to this stuff.

TV news anchors have an important message to deliver on election night. Their clothing shouldn't 'be a distraction.'

Pretty sure wardrobe departments are a relic of the past.

Global News pulled this stunt earlier this year:

All anchors wore the exact same outfit for a week straight. No complaints were levied against the men wearing the same suit, meanwhile Global received loads of comments from the public regarding the women repeating the same outfit.

Is "housecoat" a uniquely Canadian term? I think the rest of the world calls it a robe. When my wife talks to our neighbours in Florida about a housecoat or a chesterfield they seem confused by it.

I think "housecoat", as we use it, is rather Canadian, given that we're generally referring to a "bathrobe". Brits might be more likely to use the term "dressing gown".

"Chesterfield" is most definitely uniquely Canadian but I find its usage to be waning, replaced by "couch".

Yeah it was a pretty dumb segment, but probably right for its target audience - a video simplification of print news those who were unwilling or unable to read.

My pops usually started his day wearing a housecoat and reading the newspaper - once Bob Hunter showed up on BT, dad was furious and figured he should've had the job as he'd been "doing it longer".
