It's been a long time since there's been a live overnight music radio show in the GTA and it's almost certainly been longer since such a show staged a live event. For just over a year, 94.9 The Rock in Oshawa (aka CKGE-FM) has had Ed The Sock doing an actual honest-to-goodness live all night show.

Now the station is taking him on the road for one evening, hosting what it calls Ed The Sock's "Socktoberfest."

The idea is simple - bring a pair of used or new socks to be donated to the homeless this winter and you can get in, although you have to be 19 or over. The station describes the promotion, which is being held at a local theatre. this way:

"...members of the Nighttime Neighbourhood (Ed’s overnight audience) will participate in on-stage games, performances and contests and music will be provided by special guests Highteens and  Blamethrower!"

It runs from 7-11PM on October 24th.

It's a great idea and very on-brand, but I have to admit I'm curious about one thing: how will they maintain the illusion of Ed The Sock not being a puppet? Are they going to hide Ed's alter ego, Steven Kerzner, behind a wall or podium or something to maintain the illusion? How do you keep that up for four hours straight? It's fine on radio but a personal appearance really won't work if he can be seen there manipulating the prop and talking for him.

Other than that, it sounds like a worthwhile cause and very cleverly handled. I wish them luck. More here if you're interested.

here is a precedent from the days when he was on TV. They had guests and visitors in the studio and they were able to make it work. Yes, a live setting is a bit more risky but I'd have to think they wouldn't be putting this on without having considered all the angles.
