They may not be the staples they once were, but a jingle package is still the one thing no other radio station can play. Here's how they've evolved over the changing face of the industry. 

JAM Productions' Jonathan Wolfert says the biggest change came when the FCC changed the rules about how many stations a company could own in the same market, a move that almost ruined radio.

"...for a long time, owners didn’t want to spend a nickel more than they had to on programming, because those stations that used to compete with each other were now owned by the same entity, and as long as somebody was listening to one of those stations, they didn’t care which one it was,” Wolfert said.

 “Jingles became less of a necessity. But in time management realized that they had to give people something entertaining or no one would listen, and the trend slowly reversed.”
