Maybe the last thing you'd expect as Corus goes through financial disaster, but Global has decided to expand its 5:30 news by half an hour, starting it at 5 PM beginning Sept. 16th. Antony Robart takes on the anchor duties, and them sticks around to join Tracy Tong for the 6. Global National stays put at 6:30, giving the Toronto station 2 1/2 hours of news in the afternoons.

Also of note: Queen's Park Bureau Chief Colin D'Mello has replaced the recently released Alan Carter as host of the Sunday news program Focus Ontario, definitely a solid choice.

But what happens to the Y&R?  Does it move to 4pm or is it gone in a cost cutting move?

Zap2it.com has it still at 4:30, but as this is a very recent announcement, perhaps it will reset to 4 PM.

Y&R probably moves to 4 PM, which is when it airs on Global stations in BC, Edmonton, Calgary, and Saskatchewan.

Frankly it's long overdue they moved their news to 5 PM. Citytv, CP24, and CFTO have been occupying that timeslot so Global will have difficulty making inroads there.

A 90-minute local daily newscast...I wonder how much of it will be recycled. Hopefully they can place the items that will air on National earlier in the 5pm hour to maximize separation.

Global is wants to go head to head with CTV Toronto... They could care less about City News
It also gives them an additional half hour Mon - Fri... Cancon, news, but still Cancon...  kinda makes up for the loss of ETC.

Also, if Corus wants to make a case to get local news funding restored, this is trying to put a best foot forward.

My mothe-in-law will be discombobulated! Her “story” has been on at 4.30 for as long as she can remember.

I would think the ad revenue during the 5-5.30 time on Y&R would be more lucrative ? More eyes on the screen . I would guess a high number of Y&R viewers leave their tv's and begin dinner production at 5.30, I know my mother did in her time and now my wife does the same.

Anything that employs Canadian on-air talent over American 'actors' mumbling their way through a long-long-past-its-useful-date American soap is good in my books.

Expansion of Global news and yet they let Alan Carter go.  The inmates are running the asylum.

They're working with existing bodies. No (fresh) new faces.
If they hired someone fresh and new, your point might be stronger...or not, because maybe new faces agree to work for less.

Speaking of Alan Carter, I just discovered a long dormant (2021) but still up Twitter post he made back then. It was about a sitting MPP who was ousted over his position on COVID vaccinations. It features an animated gif he added to punctuate the story. And all I can say is there's a certain amount of irony in looking at it now.
