Why Would A Free Showbiz Website Deliberately Blur Out Its Articles?

I'm curious if anyone knows why a site like Deadline.com has begun deliberately blurring the copy on every article it publishes. It's not a pay site and there's no offer to force you to give it anything to access its information. The home page is clean, yet when you click on any article, you're confronted with a page of blurred text.

Why would they do this if they're not dinging users for money? It makes no sense to me. Has anyone else run into this?

(By the way, the fix is easy. Simply hit "Control A" on your keyboard and it will highlight the entire page in blue as if you wanted to print it. You don't have to print anything, but it will be easily read at that point, so it's simple to defeat.  So why do it at all?)

They have a pop-up urging you to sign up to their newsletter, with the text behind blurred until you close it.

If you have a pop-up blocker, I could imagine that would be a conflict.

I don't see the pop-up, so that's probably what's behind it. Thanks.

Figured it out. I use the Brave browser and when I turned on Block Scripts, it returned to normal. It never would have occurred to me, so thanks for the push in the right direction.

An easy fix that works on most websites is to install an extension for your browser that toggles JavaScript off. Just remember to turn it back on when you're done otherwise web pages won't load properly.
