With normal weekend host Brad Smith filling in for John Oakley for the past two weeks, I didn't really expect him to appear on his afternoon weekend segment. Everyone needs a day off.

What I did expect was a slew of rerolls in the time slot. But it turns out, 640 - to its credit - is going another way. They're putting a guy named Ron Chhinzer (and no, that's not a typo, his name has two "h's") in his place. Chhinzer is a former Toronto cop who recently ran in the federal election for the Conservatives in Oakville.

He didn't win, but he did get noticed and has been a frequent guest on crime issues during Greg Brady's morning show. Now he's getting a chance to host one of his own, being given a shot at the 3-5 PM slot on Saturday.

It marks an ongoing recent trend by the station of putting on people without a lot of radio experience (Davelle Morrison, Brad Smith) and seeing how they do.

I have no idea if this guy will succeed or not, but he seems very erudite during his occasional appearances as a guest, and it will be worth a listen to see how he does.

There aren't many radio people interested anymore, they're all either too old or too expensive; and they've "been there, done that". There was a time when every fill in host was chasing the possibility of a full time gig, so they did their best to prove they had "it" when they covered someone's vacation.

Nowadays, fill ins all have (lucrative?) other/FT jobs and they seem to be doing this "radio thing" without any desire to become permanent.
