I was not a fan of Roseanne Barr as a person, but her sitcom was a groundbreaker for a host of reasons. But my favourite part of the old show was the occasional surrealistic touch it would often take, a kind of wink to the viewers.
When the actress who played Becky, the eldest daughter, came back after a few seasons off - she'd been replaced by someone else - there was a nod to the audience when Roseanne asked her, "Where the hell have you been?"
But this is perhaps the ultimate instance of complete surrealism, when the closing segment of the show saw almost the entire cast replaced by the (uncredited) stars of Gilligan's Island! I used to watch "Roseanne" and I have to admit I have no memory of this. But talk about bizarre. It's worth a watch just to see how strange it is.
I love stuff like this. I wish more shows would do this kind of thing.
