I still believe this is the most incredible moment ever in human achievement. And if you were around then, you were surely watching it.

And of course, it wouldn't have been a TV event without a sponsor...

Not everyone was glued to the tv that night.  There was a bunch out on a place called Chappaquidick that had other issues to deal with.

So was Chappaquiddick the instigator to release the filmed moon landing as a distraction?

Yes, I'm being facetious. Conspiracy theories are fun to discuss. While I've been very aware of these two events that predate me, I don't ever recall being aware that they happened so close to each other.

Regarding the Texaco sponsorship - would anybody know if that was a one-off or was Texaco a then-regular sponsor of CTV News?

Kubrick wasn’t pleased with any of the one hundred plus takes so he decided, Bill O’Reilly-like, to do it live.  But a time wasting distraction was needed in order to set up the studio.  Hello Teddy.  Goodbye Mary Jo.

Why do you think “Neil” and “Buzz” left the LEM six hours before their scheduled EVA?  Kubrick had the light composition just right and went for it.
Good Lord that’s so stupid it’s almost believable.
”Buzz” would punch me out for it, though.

Fun trivia fact: The TV transmission from Apollo 11 at Tranquility Base was only in black and white.

I was a kid in Vancouver when it happened and I remember our family got up at about four AM for one of the events, I forget if it was the landing or the moon walk, but I will never forget the whole experience.
I had a model of both the Saturn Five Rocket and the LEM
I was glued to every second of it.
Walter Cronkite never once let on that it was all a fake, and he would have known, right?
That's the way it was.

I was in Winnipeg, my family was visiting relatives. I remember my dad waking me up to watch the coverage and him saying he never thought he would see something like this in his lifetime. He passed away in 1997. I think of that night every time I hear or see a mention of that event.

It would be interesting to see the Neilsen ratings for the event as far as who watched on which network. I suspect CBS with Uncle Walter would have been the big winner since CBS was the most watched network overall from 1955-70.
