I just got an email about my Sportsnet plus account.  Going up by a staggering $50 per year.

There better be both a world series and stanley cup appearance in the jays/leafs immediate future!!!

no doubt tsn plus will follow suit sometime soon.

You're not alone.

Sports fans share outrage online as Sportsnet jacks up prices: 'An outright middle finger'

Took me all of five minutes to cancel my subscription. Upon receiving my confirmation, they added a small note. "We're sorry to see you go" I will now use the several streaming sites that are of dubious legality.

I would bet on the Jays to make it to the World Series before the Leafs get to the Stanley Cup Final. It is simply a numbers game. The NHL has four best of seven series. MLB has a best of three Wild Card, best of five divisional round and two best of seven, League Championship and World Series. Not going to happen in the "immediate future" though.

I hope subscribers drop them like hot turds. For Rogers to jack up rates by 25 & 30% is pure greed. They’ve got higher bills to pay now, Vladdy, their NHL monopoly, and the “weird stadium in the middle of nowhere” all start to add up, not to mention the channels they pouched from Corus that nobody can now watch, unless they have Rogers cable (HGTV, Food etc). I enjoy my sports but would not now pay $325 for this package, nor should you! And Rogers needs better decision makers while we’re at it.

Agreed. That's why I cancelled my subscription yesterday. I hope others follow suit. Large corporations only begin to listen to consumers when the profit margins head in the wrong direction and shareholders get nervous.

Yup. Rogers is going to be very angry once they learn that people have wandered off to other options.
(legal or not) for a lot less money.
Sportsnet plus needs to go down, not up for customers that are already in some sort of sports package.
Perhaps it should also be free for customers paying $39.99 monthly for the Rogers Sports pack...

Just got my Fido bill and discovered an unannounced rate increase of 8%, going from $50 to $54 per month. I'm thinking of switching to Freedom, which ironically, roams on the Rogers network when out of range.

I heard they are increasing their prices as Rogers is shutting down their 3G network by the end of this month.

Not to be ignored is Rogers almost tripling the prices of seats in the 2nd level of the TD section. Both of my brothers-in-law are cancelling their season tickets. Hopefully many more will do the same.

Oh it doesn't stop there! A $35 connection fee for Smart Phones isn't good enough for Rogers, so now they charge $80! They say it can get waived through the loyalty department, but I doubt it'll be a simple process.

And to think they started out delivering crystal clear reception of 2, 4, 7, 6, 9 and 11. As a bonus Mr. Rogers would throw in CHEX and CKCO which were generally not available to viewers with their Buffalo aimed chimney antennas. All for $3-$4 per month.

Is Rogers out to ensure the Rogers-hate is perpetually in effect? If so, they're getting pretty good at it. The hate-on for Bell hate seems to peak around Let's Talk Day and then subsides for a while.

More and more people are becoming angry about the increases, as noted in this story from the Canadian Press. It quotes a Brock University sports marketing professor who thinks this latest huge hike will come home to roost - although he worries that people's memories are short and they'll eventually just forget about it.

“A rational fan would say, ‘OK, look, Rogers just paid even more of a premium to get the hockey rights. I expect probably a price increase,’” he said. “The challenge is, the price is increasing substantially, and the level of service that consumers and fans have been getting over the last couple of years has been suspect — and I think that’s really the crux of the issue.”

Now that everybody has swallowed the Sportsnet price hike and moved on, The Big Red Machine is freely admitting they're looking at cuts:

https://ca.yahoo.com/finance/news/rogers-communications-reports-q2-profit-113127196.html

The Toronto-based telecom company believes its stock price undervalues its media and sports holdings and says it is "pursuing all options ... to monetize and surface the very substantial unrecognized market value" of those assets.

In laymen's terms: Eff you, pay me.

"I expect that as we roll in the Toronto Blue Jays' Rogers Centre with Scotiabank Arena and the other venues within MLSE and the sports teams within MLSE, we will find revenue and cost synergies," chief financial officer Glenn Brandt replied.

I thought "synergy" had ceased being a topical buzzword in the early 2000s.

Makes me glad I don't care about sports.
