You've probably heard about the CRTC ordering foreign services to contribute to help fund local news for struggling stations in Canada through something called the Independent Local News Fund.

I had no idea that Corus was not able to receive any money, at a time when Global and its parent company, Corus, is struggling. But after a decision released on Monday, people in their newsroom will have new reasons to celebrate as the Commission has decided to include Corus stations in future funding.

Does anyone know why Corus was originally excluded? I don't see why they would have been left out.

The fund is intended for "independent" news orgs.

The CRTC saw Shaw and Global as one company because JR Shaw/the Shaw family was the controlling shareholder for both companies.

With Shaw selling itself to Rogers, and Rogers favouring CityNews, Corus is now considered “independent” from a BDU or vertically integrated companies like Bell and Rogers.
