A Chesterfield is a specific design of sofa from the mid 1700's and the sides and back are of equal height and tufted. (tufted: those funny indented buttons equally spaced along the inside of the sides and back)
A chesterfield is, as already noted by several punned-its, Canuck for sofa amongst other things.
I always thought of a housecoat as something made of cotton with buttons down the front, whilst a robe was made of terry cloth or some more absorbent material, with no buttons but was tied around the waist with a sash.
The younger generation has started calling sweatshirts sweaters which I find annoying for some unearthly reason. I grew up calling an umbrella a bumbershoot and a sweatshirt a "raggy."
