Audacity Software Warning

If you are using version 3.0 or later of sound editing software Audacity, you may want to remove it. It’s now considered spyware. Versions before that should be OK if you don’t update.

Re: Audacity Software Warning

That's not true.  They're collecting user telemetry.  I'm not big on telemetry gathering myself, but that's how software manufacturers make money now.  It's 2021, so we have to get used to it.

Re: Audacity Software Warning

The phrase "Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation and authorities requests (if any)" seems pretty all-encompassing to me.  That sounds pretty all-encompassing.

Seems you'd be better off just spending $60 on Reaper.  Mind you, I honestly have no idea what they're collecting either.

Re: Audacity Software Warning

That's just the problem - almost ALL software does this today.  The entire mobile ecosystems of Android and iOS are ALL ABOUT data collection.  Even Microsoft Windows versions 10 and 11 "excel" in this area.  The idea is to provide low cost or free software to the user, collect usage information, and make money selling to potential advertisers and partners.  There's no money in selling licensed software for long-term use any more.

Someone that used to be on this forum always cited that "websites are so 2006", and now that time has certainly come to pass.  I collect and use PC Optimum points, and EVERY DAY nearly, I'm bombarded with emails on downloading the PC Optimum app.  I used the website, however if I use an ad-blocker along with strict cookie settings, and I use a physical card to purchase stuff, then I'm of virtually no use to Loblaws Inc.  If they could just get me to download the damned app on to my mobile device, they could collect usage information, and make money off of me.  Damn that Jody guy!  LOL

Re: Audacity Software Warning

I haven't checked it out, but someone has taken Audacity and cloned it (legally, since Audacity is Open Source), without the alleged spyware portion:  https://github.com/tenacityteam/tenacity

As you can see, they call it Tenacity.

There's also another fork in the form of "Dark Audacity" - http://www.darkaudacity.com/ .

Re: Audacity Software Warning

As of April, Audacity was sold and is now based in Cyprus.  Runaway quickly!

Re: Audacity Software Warning

meh

I use Audacity and love it.

While I take online security seriously, the latest policy statement doesn't overly concern me.  I would be more concerned about the apparent knock-offs.  Who controls them?

Today, it's rather standard to state information can be shared "regional law enforcement" as many services such as Bell and Rogers may also share data with law enforcement (if provided with a warrant).

You might be surprised what Bell and Rogers say they can do in their respective "privacy" statements.

https://www.rogers.com/consumer/privacy-policy

https://www.bell.ca/Security_and_privacy/Commitment_to_privacy

Of note, this SOWNY board (like Facebook, Twitter, Spotify) is probably run on "cloud" servers outside of Canada (maybe even Russia on occasion).

You never know where your information is REALLY going (or who is listening through your smart speaker)

Take this with a grain of salt, but it's home to the laundering of Russian mob/oligarch money.  Cyprus is part of the EU and an easy way to get your money to the West.

To simplify things, should I invest in an Apple Laptop? Will that work to solve the problem as well as their Smartphone:

Apple is trying to break third-party tracking cookies.  Third-party cookies are stored under a different domain than you are currently visiting. They are mostly used to track users between websites and display more relevant ads between websites.  That's why in the Apple commercial the man selling the coffee knows you bought itch cream.
