CBC's Cross Country Check Up Goes All CanCon On June 6th

It's supposed to be a talk show but it appears next Sunday it will be singers that will be doing much of the talking, in honour of the Junos at 50.

Cross Country Check Up: Tell us your favourite Canadian song

This really shows a problem that CBC has with entertainment and award show programming.  I notice this every year during TIFF when other broadcasters like CTV, Global, City even CHCH do a much better job of covering the 2nd biggest film festival in the world.  CBC for whatever reason doesn't seem to have an entertainment division, or it is very small.  They don't  have the knowledgeable reporters or the infrastructure to interview first level and international entertainment personalities.

Unlike Global or CTV, City and CHCH, CBC doesn't have a dedicated television entertainment  program like ET Canada, ETalk, Inside Edition or Access Hollywood.  And CBC doesn't have the in house infrastructure like CTV and Global for promo of a show like the Junos on radio and specialty channels.  Almost all of the promo for the Juno Awards has been limited to CBC TV, CBC News Network and a little on CBC radio.  Sort of reaching the same people over and over, and many that will have a limited interested in pop music or an award show.

Nothing wrong with what Cross Canada CheckUp is doing, and the program may be quite interesting since Ian seems to have a good background in music.  His interviews with artists that I have heard are interesting and he does his research.  Wendy Mesley on the other hand was a disaster interviewing groups or singers. For years they seemed to assign these stories to her.

Looking at the BBC in England, they are totally at ease with pop music and popular artists.  BBC produces the best music awards show on television with the Brit Awards.  Always entertaining, funny with great music.   CBC on the other hand seems ill at ease with pop music and pop culture, and often gets overly caught up in the roots and folk aspect of music which is ok to a point.  But the Juno's are really about popular music, and the Canadian artists that represent this.  Not Tom Power interviewing a folk band from Northern BC that nobody has heard of before.

I’ve always thought of “q” as CBC’s entertainment program, albeit on radio.

Q is the proper place for this not Cross Country Checkup.
