Enjoyable Christmas music

What Christmas music does everyone find enjoyable?

Classical orchestral stuff?
Frank Sinatra and crooner stuff?
Modern Mariah Carey stuff?

I tend to keep my radio tuned to Classical 96.3 for their selection of Christmas music

I like to keep things classy

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

Wow, I like Crooner and a bit of rock...like Bruce Springsteen and this one from back in CFNY days...when the MarsBar was the program director

It's the Waitresses, and it is a bit of punk meets electro pop...

John Lennon's and So it is Christmas makes me want to end my life, I find it a bit depressing to be honest...

But songs that lift you up make me want to tune in...

Here are the Waitresses...enjoy the song...and the link below...

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

I've posted this on another thread but my go-to Christmas records are the John Waters-curated Christmas record, and the South Park/Mr. Hanky Christmas Classics. A perfect salve for the worst the Holidays has to offer.

As for the Wal-Mart punk sham known as The Waitresses, if I ever hear that song again it'll be ten billion years too soon.

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

Was out shopping yesterday for a bit. One of the stores I was in had the radio on CHYM-FM Kitchener, and I have to admit, the Christmas music certainly added to the mood and enjoyment of shopping. Like their big sister station CHFI, CHYM is all Christmas music 24/7. And like CHFI, CHYM is usually the highest rated station in the market.

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

Well, to each their own.  I rather like The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping myself.  Then again, I only usually ever hear it a few times around this time of year and then it hibernates for another 11 months.

But if you're looking for the most vile, filthy, disgusting, clever and funny as hell punk christmas record you need to subject yourself to The Yobs' Christmas Album Volume 1.  Those who dare, just search youtube for "The Yobs"

One song that drives me nuts in "Santa Baby" by Madonna.  Her version is whiny and childish.  Contrast that to Eartha Kitt's version which is much more playful and tongue in cheek and rather cute.

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

I have always loved "The Twelve Pains Of Christmas" by Bob Rivers and the "Peanuts" Christmas music done by Vince Guaraldi.

Not your typical Christmas tune, but I love it.
Fairytale of New York by The Pogues.

Agree, a favourite since I first saw the video in the old MuchMusic days.

And then this comes up:

BBC radio presenter bans ‘nasty’ Fairytale Of New York as he is ‘no longer comfortable’ playing Pogues Christmas song

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

Oh boy!  Can we stop it with the whole cancel culture?  I'm bloody tired of it.

It's actually a beautiful song from a fabulous album.  Just uttering a word doesn't make it offensive.  In the quoted article, (Thanks RA) Shane McGowan points out the context the offending terms were used.  When put in context with the lyrics of the whole song, it makes sense.

Enough of the virtue signalling.

This latest trend of suddenly taking offence at and dismissing cultural productions from previous generations is annoying and projects an aura of self claimed superiority by its proponents...

Irony. Indeed. But, I suppose the current trend of taking offence and labeling with vitriolic terms only applies to that, right? Surely, it wouldn't extend to bulletin boards like... THIS ONE! https://cdn.boardhost.com/emoticons3/silly.png

Interesting. For someone who doesn't want to feed me, you SURE have a perpetual endless buffet table of delicious vittles.

Are you following your own manifesto or is this EXACTLY what a TROLL does when then can't intelligently debate someone else?!

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

I have been seriously distracted by a family emergency, but I'm getting continuously unhappy with the vibes being expressed by this poster.

Look, I have no problem with people disagreeing with members here. But we've got a very good atmosphere going on SOWNY which I've worked hard to maintain and these kinds of unnecessary hostile posts threaten to destroy that. I've learned the hard way that you can't let it go on for too long.

So I will repeat something I've said often - it's OK to disagree. It's not OK to be deliberately disagreeable or disrespectful. It's really my only rule. I hope all will heed it.

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

I've always like Huron Carol ever since I  first heard it at St Brigid's School in east-end Toronto when the nuns were still running things. Times have changed  and today First Nations people might have an issue with the wording and the implications. (Which I totally get.) Maybe that's why one almost never hears it any more.

The music combined with the video makes for a beautiful presentation.

(This post was not on-screen when I submitted my last response to TheConsultant).

You are not "distracted".  Your' feelings/priorities are exactly where they should be, RA.

Today is the 20th anniversary of my father's passing and I can assure you that while the years ''have an effect" on one's feelings;  they do not by any measure eliminate them.

Your work here is second to none and I thank you for that.

Thanks for this! I've heard some tracks here and there, but it's nice to know the source.

Re: Enjoyable Christmas music

in my opinion, overkill can make the best song(s) annoying. especially when it involves a music category with a zero turn-over rate.

I prefer the original 1979 version by Elmo & Patsy.
