How Thefts Of Radios Led To The Death Penalty

To understand this story, you have to picture the way things were 100 years ago. It was 1926 and a new fangled gadget was catching the attention of the world - radios. But the cabinet sized receivers cost a small fortune back then and like a fancy new sports car today, thieves were more than happy to get their hands on one.

Which brings us to Queen's, New York and a determined thief who terrified a neighbourhood by stealing every radio he could get his hands on. The crime spree kept getting worse and the guy behind it was ruthless, openly shooting at the cops that were after him, and too often, hitting them with bullets.

He was finally caught and his actions - which included killing a police officer in an attempt to get away - landed him in jail and eventually saw him executed for his crimes. It's hard to imagine this today, when you can barely even find a radio in a store, let alone someone's home. But it happened a century ago, showing how desperate thieves may not change - but times definitely do.

It's quite a story and you can read it here.
