Many media observers think it's a real possibility. The Oscars rights recently moved to YouTube and streaming services are always looking to big and live events to drive subscriptions.
So what would happen to Canadian coverage of the Olympic events if say, a Netflix were to get the sole rights to the event in the coming years? (The CBC retains the rights until 2032. After that, all bets are off.)
According to Scott Moore, the former head of CBC Sports and Rogers Sportsnet, you could wave goodbye to in-depth coverage of Canadian athletes.
"If CBC were to lose the rights, it would probably mean they are losing them to an international streamer, who would not put the emphasis on Canadian coverage the way the CBC has done so well in every Games they’ve covered.
Say if Netflix were to get the rights in Canada: The chances of them launching a Canadian broadcast the way that CBC has for years would be almost nil. It’s why in 15 years, I hope I will be watching the Games through the CBC.”
