In the "what will they think of next?" category comes this - technology being employed by the U.S. streaming service Peacock that enables viewers to turn up (or down) the sound of the crowd during a live televised sporting event, as well as the announcing crew calling the game.
So if you wanted to get rid of the background noise, and just hear the announcers, you could do it.
Or you could turn down the endless patter from the play-by-play people and just listen to the crowd ambience.
Or of course, you can just leave it as is.
I like the idea, but I'm such a neurotic type when given these kind of choices, I'd probably spend the whole game fooling around with it and completely missing the action.
Peacock adding enhancements that may allow fans to mute announcers, control crowd noise

This would be cool. With a good surround system to watch a game with only crowd noise could be appealing

I frequent a message board that is devoted to NFL football, and quite often the blabby announcers and colour commentators are pilloried over their yakking. This innovation sounds (?) like a welcome development.

I frequently reduce the volume of my centre speaker so I can turn up my amp and hear the surround sound crowd. That's because the sound mix usually has the commentators coming in loud and it overcomes the left, right and both effects speakers. I prefer doing it with hockey games and motorsports, especially F1 because the announcer is annoying and thinks yelling is a good way to create excitement. In the past there was an announcer strike on CBC French and it was great tuning in hockey games with no commentators at all, just blissful sounds of the game and the crowd. It was as close to being at the game as I've enjoyed on TV. If I had my way there would be an option to mute all commentating because it doesn't always add to the viewing experience, especially if the viewer knows the sport well or the announcers are annoying. I'm not a football fan but I applaud the idea because it's long over due. I think F1 racing on SKY Sports UK has had the option for a few years. I just don't get why they think fans watching TV would want to turn down the crowd noise so they can hear 2 people talking. In my case it's the direct opposite.

I think this is a great feature.
People hear differently plus as we age, for many, more competing sounds just get jumbled up making it harder to hear individual sounds. The ability to tune different tracks of sound would allow folks to tweak clarity to their own particular liking/needs.
