Legendary Kids TV Host Would Have Turned 100 Last Week

If I remember it right, it was on CFTO every weekday afternoon at 12:30 PM. And I came home from public school to have lunch and watch it. It was the Soupy Sales Show and as corny as it was, there was nothing else like it on TV.

Soupy would have turned 100 years old last week. He first hit it big in Michigan, with a show out of Detroit.

One of my favourite parts of the show - one of the few my dad and I could watch and laugh at together - was when Soupy would turn on the 1940s-style radio in his kitchen. Frank Nastasi would provide most of the off-screen voices including the radio announcer. The jokes were awful but somehow still great.

--------

Announcer: The weather today: cloudy with a good chance of snew.

Soupy: What's "snew?"

Announcer: Nothing much. What's snew with you?

OR

Announcer: It was all about a buccaneer.

Soupy: What's a buccaneer?

Announcer: A buccaneer is the price of corn at my local neighbourhood market.

--------

Ridiculous but you couldn't help but laugh.

I interviewed Soupy once back when he doing a music show on WNBC. He was great then and I still have very fond memories of him today. They don't make shows like his anymore and maybe - given the quality of those lines and the endless pies-in-the-face - that's a good thing. But they sure were fun for a while when they were on.

Happy 100th birthday to Detroit icon Soupy Sales

A good friend of mine often refers to Soupy Sales, in particular when someone tells a somewhat questionable joke. After reading the two examples of Sales’ humour (thanks RA), I think he may well have been the originator of Bad Dad Jokes, which I actually enjoy, but my family doesn’t….!

His one-liners were indeed, Dad jokes, long before there was such a term. But as a kid, I thought they were hilarious. Then there was the guy at the door, and all you ever saw was his hand. Or the "Do Not Touch" button in the kitchen, although I don't think we ever discovered what happened if you did.

And did you know there was very briefly a Soupy Sales comic book? Here's a sample page, featuring Pookie The Lion and - as a bonus - involves that vintage radio. Again, not terribly funny but it's nice to know Soupy was immortalized in his own series of panels.

Some more vintage Soupy stuff I'd long forgotten I even had. It starts with Soupy doing his most famous hit, "The Mouse."

And from TV Guide in 1965. (Given that he had a minor hit with "The Mouse," you can't escape the irony of the mouse killing ad in the middle.)

And if you can stand one more, here's an autograph from Soupy which I obtained as a little kid when our family went to Atlantic City. I had long forgotten I even had this. Interesting to see who else was appearing at the "Steel Pier."
