Why Gilligan's Island Almost Didn't Take Place On An Island

The execs. at CBS hated the idea of stranding the castaways on a deserted island for the entire series and wanted to call it "Gilligan's Travels" instead. 

But creator Sherwood Schwartz came up with a way to save the day, and it still resonates to this day.

So basically, CBS wanted it to be Lost in Space in the Pacific Ocean.

I agree with a comment made in the comment section. Gilligan's travels would have been a great spin off series.
Instead cartoon was the way to go, with all new adventures of Gilligan:
