NBC Show Delivers Major "Easter Egg" For Viewers

An "Easter egg," in case you're not familiar with the term, is a nod to viewers about something they know from somewhere else but don't expect to see in a TV show.

Which brings us to the Halloween edition of NBC's "Brilliant Minds," a medical drama based on the real life pioneering neurologist Dr. Oliver Sacks. Zachary Quinto plays the lead role of Oliver Wolf, and deals with his own issues.

In the finale of last Monday's episode, Wolf agrees to finally let his hair down and go out with a colleague to celebrate the Oct. 31st Trick or Treat holiday. In the final scene of the show, they're heading toward a hospital elevator, both dressed in costume, with their backs to the camera.

When they turn around, you see the woman dressed up as Lt. Uhura from Star Trek, and Quinto in full "Mr Spock" mode. The Easter egg: Quinto plays the Vulcan in the modern versions of the Star Trek movies, and while there's absolutely no reference to that famous role in the show, it was a wink and a nod to viewers who love the classic sci-fi series.

In my experience, viewers in the know really appreciate those little inside references, although you have to be careful how many of them you do in a show.

"Brilliant Minds," by the way, is shot right here in Toronto. A friend of mine was recently an extra on the show and spent hours on the set waiting for his appearance as a member of the hospital board. He had no dialogue but they paid him for his time and he tells me he enjoyed the experience.
